Why did Buzz Williams pull his starters with over 2 minutes left?

Overcoming 13 points wasn’t likely, but not insurmountable. Were his starters gassed, or was he actually conceding to allow non-starters to get playing time in the championship game?

I’d say to preserve them for the tourney, but with this loss it may be the NIT.

That and intentionally sending Santi to the line were bizarre moves. A comeback at that point was unlikely, but I've seen stranger things happen.
A&M routinely rotates 11 players. When they rotated, they still had 2 starters in the game. The other 3 play lots of minutes. Buzz was basically saying go as hard as you can the next 4 minutes because these guys (the guys coming out) were spent.

That makes sense, but what about fouling Santi? If you're going to foul with 2 minutes to go to extend the game, you've got to at least try to foul a bad ft shooter. I think they might have gotten mixed up and thought they had another foul to give.

He knew he could not close the gap with our defense. He knew it was time to piss on the fire and call the dogs.
Agreed if the last impression of the tournament selection committee was the lead swelling from fouling and us making free throws then a bubble is more likely to burst.

He turned out the lights cause the party was OVER!

yes, and he tries to give all his players time in the game if already decided. I wish more coaches did that.

Players spend so much time in practice and it must be discouraging to know you will probably not get in the game even in a blowout. Does not show much respect to them when you can’t even let them in the game with 1 to 2 minutes left.

Actually, I would like to see Barnes do more of that. With I think 1:29 left I thought he might, he could have put the subs in then, let them tell their kids some day I played in the SEC championship game. Besides, don’t risk starters getting hurt after game decided.

He knew it was over and wanted his team to get the respect they deserved from the fans. Plus he said before the game he was going to play everyone and I guess he did. Kudos to him for letting everyone experience the SEC Championship Game.

I really do hate that for Buzz Williams.

His team played hard and happened to beat Arkansas and Auburn.

Meanwhile, Michigan gets in with a 17-14 record.

Hope to see them make the Tournament next year.
