I apologize if this issue has been discussed before, but I am very curious as to why Rocky Top is no longer played with the same pace and zeal as it used to.

For example, this video from 1999 illustrates my point: start listening carefully at the 2:38 mark: 1999 Tennessee 38 Notre Dame 14 (Video 1) - YouTube
In particular, the beginning of Rocky Top is fast and in my opinion, represents the way that it should be played.

I am not old enough to remember those days, but watching that video makes me wonder what happened. The way it's played now just seems flat in comparison.

In all honesty, UT's band is not as good as it was in the late 90's IMO. Are circle drills, which we always do against bama, will probably not even be as good as bama's band.

While we are on conspiracies....

At the game Saturday, notice how Bammers band will always wait and play over Pride of the Southland. Annoying as crap. Their band director will literally be standing on top of a ladder looking down towards our band waiting for them to play something. Been doing since I can remember going back to early 80's.

They rarely do the circle drill anyway. Saw it one time last year and thought it was cool. Haven't seen it since.
There's something wrong when I get excited about seeing the band at a UT game, waiting in anicipation of the circle drill.

If you watch Bama's $1.98 Band, they will march to a spot, stop, play a song real loud, march a bit and end up at another spot, stop, play, etc.... While the Pride isnt as loud these days as in the past they will at least play and march at the same time

It's not really slower than it ahould be these days, it's just that we had a tendency to play it waaaaay fast when we got excited. Song lasted about :12 when we beat UF in 04

One explanation might be that the guy who designed drill for POTS was run off by Sousa & was hired at Bama.

We are losing. We complain about losing and when that becomes natural around here, we start complaining about the way Rocky Top is played. Next will be Smokies dog house, than whatever until we win. Bottom line is this- If we are winning than no one says a thing about Rocky Top.

On a brighter note, the band does not give the same fire and excitement behind the circle drill as they use to.

Maaan oh maaan. Don't get me started on the state of our band. This Souza moron has completely screwed up 40 years of tradition and excellence.

Was a music ed. major at UT. Marched in the Pride for four years. This band is a shadow of what it once was. Totally not baggin on the kids, it's all in the hands of the director, and he's a dimwit. :realmad::realmad::realmad::realmad::realmad:

Band recruiting has taken a bit of a nose dive with all the band director "hot seat" talk. Our recruits are slower, and the results show up in the stands and on the field at halftime.

South Carolina last year. That was my first time seeing it and probably won't be seeing it again for a while. :ermm:

Can't play it the same amount because we play it when we do well....something that doesn't happen much anymore.

It's all because we went to a different alignment this year. Takes a couple of years and the right kind of band members to get comfortable with the new scheme, know where to line up, and how to make adjustments on the fly.
