Do the players think it's "cool?"

I remember seeing it happen once a decade. Now, seeing it happen to 3 different players on one play seems ridiculous.

I had this problem in high school and it was because the chin strap wasnt tight enough. One hit required 9 stitches across my chin. Those straps got to be tight. A lot of it depends too if you can lead with your helmet when you tackle, the face mask on the other players numbers etc.

When I played football, my chin strap was never loose. The only problem I ever had was losing air and having to pump more air in. I don't miss those migraine headaches either.

plus "skill" position players usually dont completely strap their chin strap on, they'll usually just half way strap it on

I dont know about college but in high school you have to have it fully strapped up to step on the field, but the bigger the impact the better chance of it coming off, so with as much hitting that is going on I can see where it would happen

I think the rule in college is 3 of the 4 snaps must be attached or you get penalized for an "equipment violation." I'm not sure, but I think that's right.

The severity of the hit doesn't usually matter. It's the angle at which the helmet hits the opponent. Granted, the harder the hit, the faster the helmet's going to come off. I don't think it's cool, but veiwers that don't really understand the safety aspects of the helmet do. And that's the majority of viewers I think. The NCAA needs to buckle down on this situation or people are seriously going to get hurt badly.

The Truth! Helmets come off more because the equipment managers are not properly fitting the helmet to the players heads. Also, a shaved head or a ton of hair can create a problem. To much hair and the fit is lose, a slick skull and it's like a pop top, one good hit and there she blows.

I'm not positive who it was (I think Toena), but in the Florida game his helmet came off twice in a row (or maybe 2 out of 3 plays), and he didn't seem to think it was cool at all. I was sitting in the endzone near where it happened, and I don't know if they showed it on tv, but the 2nd time it ended up about 15 yards from the player. He seemed pissed! So maybe opposing players "help" it off sometimes? :dunno:

until someone gets seriously injured then espn will run a week long topic on the safety of the game and blame the teams for not using precautions. Rediculous how espn will spin something.
