Why Fox News is Fox News

Interesting - using slanted journalism to expose slanted journalism.

What a concept!

Speaking of slanted..

Oh and by the way, I think that one of the bigger points was that Fox News doesn't do any journalism..:p

Still waiting for your argument :whistling:

Here are the primary criticisms of that piece.

The original premise is that FoxNews is not journalism. The vast majority of examples are from opinion shows. No one would claim that Bill O'Reilly or Hannity are practicing journalism in the traditional sense. Typical strawman approach but not objective journalism.

Second, they continually show clips of "experts" giving their opinion in a shouting/argumentative way. Again, no one would claim this is journalism.

Third, they show comments from a White House press briefing (Lockhart) and use that to suggest Fox has an agenda to bash Richard Clarke - Lockhart was making comments that many news programs covered. This is not a Fox journalist making these comments. I assume when they covered Clinton press conferences, anything said by his press secretary was also part of a Fox agenda. Numerous examples like this were shown (e.g. comments from Rice, Rumsfeld, etc.).

Fourth, they contend that graphics and music are somehow evidence of non-journalism. Perhaps but clearly this is not unique to Fox and I would suggest that CNN was the pioneer of this tool.

Fifth, they chose only sound bytes that represent the viewpoint they are trying to portray. An objective presentation of content would show countering statements that do occur on a regular basis.

Sixth, there are numerous examples daily of Fox practicing journalism. The have reporters all over the world that regularly generate and report news stories that are as objective as an other major news org. They conveniently left any reference to these occurrences out of their piece since it is countervailing to their premise.

Last, the only "news" program which they referenced on the entire report was the Britt Hume one. The clip they showed was no different than that you would see from any anchor. However, their critique was that he also appears on an opinion show and gives his opinion.

Now, I would never argue that Fox is unbiased. However, the claim that they do no journalism is a bogus claim. To back that up with onesided portrayals and sound bytes is even worse. The same story could be done about CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC or MSNBC.

Why doesn't any other news organization bear the burden of proof? The media in general does nothing to police itself. The print media has been dominated by the left for years. Until news becomes more than just another consumer product then the burden of journalistic proof sits on every media outlet.

It's about the almighty dollar. What do you think Rupert is doing at NewsCorp? He creates a station and lines it up with some big named conservative pundits and slants the media opposite of the others. It's all about business. Sensationalistic journalism sells. Murdoch is far from conservative but he knows what lines his pockets with money. I think FNC is the best business move out there. As far as quality of journalism, it falls into the same category as the other networks...."we decide on what to report"

Pretty much sums it up right there.

Which is why I have had the firm belief for about 3-4 years now that all cable news networks acting in such a fashion ought to be done away with entirely. I'll bet my bottom dollar that a significant portion of the voting public can attribute their political beliefs to opinion pieces slanted in the name of a profit, i.e. Fox News or CNN. I have met numerous people that would agree with Sean Hannity if he implied maybe Hitler wasn't such a bad guy.

I hate to say it, but I think the voting public, by and large is pretty dumb. Somethings gotta be done to make people smarter, lest representative democracy continues its steep, and already deep descent into sheer marketing tactics.

There are a lot of morons among us, but by and large I think people are a little smarter than you give them credit for.

Those ocassional loons have the ability to set back your faith in people kinda far... I knew plenty of them on the right when I lived out near the sticks in Hillsboro.

Now I'm surrounded by lefties in northeast Portland, almost all of whom share political principles that are precisely the same. It's kinda scary.

I think these ads need to play on every major network (radio and TV) and during every commercial break:
