We have played 11 freshman this year.....Half have started...and 10 are true freshman if my calculations are correct.

That is just mind-blowing to me.

Kiffin will play the best players.

Having a staff with as much NFL experience has to help also. Guys that have coached in that league should be able to best prepare players for the league. I wonder if there is a staff with as much pro experience as we have on ours?

Our previous staff put tons in the NFL.... This current staff can sell "play as a freshman" though. This staff also offers way earlier than our previous staff. Orgeron lives for offering first.

Just think if that talent had peaked somewhat here before the peaked in the league. Scary to think about. The previous staff could evaluate decently, but never really had the edge to coach them up.

It is also called rebuilding. You can only sell early playing time for the first couple of years. After that you hope those early players are still playing and the new ones can come in and develop. I think we had 19 true freshman start throughout the season last year for us. This year we maybe have half of that if that.

Kiffin and company are trying to put the players on the field they recruited because those are the ones that really believe in their system. Plus get them out there now and they gain early experience. If UT follows the path it looks like they are on, in about two years it will be hard for a true freshman to see the field. That is a good thing when you can stock pile talent like USC and the players don't mind sitting the bench as a freshman. Doesn't mean freshman won't get a chance but if your recruiting players that you hope can play than it doesn't matter because in the long run depth is more important.

Also remember UT has marketing(STAR) power. They are not a small chain. UT is like UA, people see them and remember them like every time they see the golden arches. It is easy to sell the name and the program, and even easier with the right management.

100% agree. Tennessee fans should desperately hope for playing time to be a short-term sell.

Well I see it more of a "we will play a freshman if he is the best player" type of philosophy more than anything. Not so much..."we can offer PT"

I think right now it is a combination of both. EPT and the best player. For the most part any Kiffin recruit will be his best palyers with the exception of players like E Berry. I just feel in the long run they will have to prove and hopefully it will hard to do if the talent is already in place.

DJ Fluker came in as the #1 LT in the country last year and he is 3rd string this year after losing3 of our 5 starting OL. That is the place UT looks like they are heading which means depth, which also wins games, seasons, and championships.

Alabama sucks. Just figured I would throw that in there in the spirit of the week. :)

I think his philosophy will hold up better then you guys are crediting him for once UT starts winning and builds depth. Even the upperclassmen are still kids and tend to lose focus from time to time. If they continue to recruit special freshman players some of them will get on the field over talented upperclassmen if they work hard and stay focused.

One of the Tide fans mentioned Fluker, but look at Richardson. He's getting plenty of snaps even though it would have been easy for Saban to play Ingram and Upchurch and say they were set.

Someone else mentioned USC but they're starting a freshman at QB this year. Even loaded teams can find PT for the freshman players if they're good enough.

"That's the plan," Kiffin said Tuesday. "Now that they've been here and we played our young guys so much at the beginning of the year - when you go with this style of play the way we do and the way we treat our freshmen, you're going to have some bumps in the road early in the season because we play our guys so much and they're young.

"Hopefully what that does is that contributes to them playing well at the end of the season. I think we went four years at (Southern California) with this philosophy and never lost a game in the month of November."

So it looks like a four year plan maybe?

The biggest reason the staff is recruiting so well is because they have a great group that realizes the importance of recruiting and they relate extremely well to recruits, plus they have a great mix of young guys and very proven veterans who have had a lot of success. It is a fiery, energetic, and exciting staff and they simply outwork most other staffs. Kids love that.

Hughes
Douglas(RS)

Neither of them were part of the '09 class though. That's all I can think of, plus Nuke/Oku as returners.

Forgot about Douglas. Hughes never started did he do? I thought that they started Nelson over him when Brown was out.
