Anybody ever read this novel by Nelson DeMille? The basic idea is this: Back in 80s, Reagan and his folks saw Islmac fascism as a serious threat to the US and, in response, informed all of the various leaders in the middle east that if any of their crazies ever detonated a nuclear weapon (or another weapon of mass destruction) on US soil, we would launch an onslaught of nuclear missles in their general direction and turn the entire region into a sheet of glass. The plan was code-named Wild Fire, and supposedly has been continue as new regimes take control of the various political entities take control of various countries over time. The idea was provide the ultimate deterent to allowing nutjobs from the region to attack us in any significant way - keep your crazies under control or you will all be gone. Same premise as how we dealt with the Cold War with Russia: you attack us, we release Hell against you and nobody wins. In the words of the author (and I'm paraphrasing), if we don't have a Wild Fire ultimatum in place, we should. Great read. It's a fiction book, of course, but IMO DeMille is one of the great popular novelists of our time. Good food for thought.

Reagan was an interesting man when it came to nuclear weapons. He didn't seem to like them, in any way. However, I also don't think that it would be impossible that he would want to unleash holy hell on someone if they used one on us. I know that he was extremely mad when he found out that the X-ray laser in the SDI system would have to detonate a nuclear weapon in space.....he was very against that, apparently.

Never heard of the book...I will have to pick it up. There was no better time to be in the military than when Reagan was in charge!

Many people who I know who are ex-military say the same thing. They had the best of everything and a lot of it.
