I know he made the game deciding interception, but I didn't realize it was Will who made the shoe string tackle on Milroe on the 4th and short where he broke through the line and was going to the house. He also made another outstanding tackle stopping another (possible) td run. Is he still in walk on status? If so, WHY ????? I re watched the game and noticed this.

I 'd say he is a great candidate for Defensive player of the week.

He is a walk-on. Due to sanctions there is not room to put him on scholarship

Thompson High School boasted the best quarterback and one of the best offenses in Alabama in the fall of 2018. But on a mid-October night in Trussville, Will Brooks twice intercepted Alabama commit Taulia Tagovailoa in the red zone as Vestavia Hills held the Warriors to their second lowest scoring output of the season and nearly upset one of the state’s top teams.

Long before Will Brooks was the back-end anchor of Tennessee’s best defense in two decades, he was flying under the radar and producing in the top classification of Alabama high school football. Here’s how a high school lacrosse All-American, zero-star football recruit that grew up 65 miles from the University of Alabama became the unlikely rock in Tennessee’s secondary.

“I think Will makes people around him better,” former Vestavia Hills defensive backs coach Todd Evans told RTI. “I think that’s his greatest attribute.”

...When Tennessee’s new staff arrived in January 2021, it didn’t take them long to notice the same things about their second-year safety that the Vestavia Hills staff noticed four years prior. Brooks was the first to understand concepts and answer questions as Tennessee installed its defense. “You knew right away,” Tennessee defensive backs coach Willie Martinez said on when he knew Brooks could play at the SEC level. “He immediately makes an impact as we go through practice, drill after drill, very consistent.”

William Brooks is the guy that all TN high school football players want to be, and who all the high school cheerleaders want to be with and who we want our boys to grow up to be like. He is the epitome of “I will give my All for Tennessee Today”. He has a pick-6, a game ending interception, a game ending touchdown saving tackle, and a punt recovery to his name. I kid you not when i say his name, moonshine shivers and mountains quake. This kid is All-Vol and if he’s legacy ends in UT, it will have been enough. Go Vols and Go Will Brooks!

Did he get game ball vs Alabama?

Yes he did thankfully. He had at least 2 TD saving, athletic tackles yesterday but I believe there were 3 in addition to the interception. Hes made several TFLs and is also among the team leaders in tackles. Brooks has been a standout this season.

Our whole secondary has performed quite well, McCoy is playing corner at an All American level again like he did last year as a freshman. He will get preseason honors going into his junior season next year. He put the clamps down on Williams vs Bama despite 19 passes being thrown his way. Williams torched Georgia and was the WR everyone was scared of, yet he was held to only 7 yards after catch by our DBs. He had over 350 yards after catch in the 6 games prior to Neyland.

We legitimately have a championship defense in 2024. It remains to be seen if we have the firepower on offense to bring it all home to Knoxville this year. If we attack each game on its own, we can make the playoffs and that is outstanding. GO VOLS

We favor veterans and experience- but it seems like our offense is bogged when trying to force feed Bru. I think he needs to play slot and make his money there. He could also get more carries from the slot. Need more Brazzell and Thornton. And Ethan Davis. A please a few deep balls to Mike Matthew’s.

We’re leaving a lot of speed on that bench.

this is his COVID year.
He redshirted in 2020, so he would have had a fifth year regardless. Does he not get a COVID year because he redshirted in 2020?

2020 - Redshirt
2021 - Played
2022 - Played
2023 - Played
2024 - Played

Seems from what I’ve read that the double-whammy of redshirt and COVID and the redshirt doesn’t really do anything extra. 2020 didn’t count against him and wouldn’t even if he had played OR if the COVID exemption wasn’t in place. The other four years still count though.
