Will Grier - WVU Bowl Game

No I'm serious. What makes the bowl game chances of getting hurt anymore than any other games. Why should a star play during cupcake games?

It's a genuine question.

Well it's a pretty dumb question then. When they played Youngstown St. and Kansas St., it was September and they ranked #12 and still had hopes for the Big 12 championship and making the playoff. And Kansas St. is hardly a "cupcake game", it was their Big 12 opener.

Will Grier was a legit Heisman contender against K State and Youngstown. He wanted all the stats possible then. Now, they don't matter. Speculating on skipping a playoff game is foolish.

It wouldn't surprise me to see guys sitting out the playoffs in the near future, I think the lure of a chance to win a NC will keep most players from doing so.

Let's just face reality here, the playoffs have made all other bowl games really meaningless except to the fans. Sure the players enjoy the experience and would like to win but they aren't anywhere as meaningful as they used to be. People go to college to prep for a career, if a guy thinks skipping a bowl game will help him get a shot at the NFL more power to him.
How many players in college actually have a chance to be in the pros. Probably less than 25% unless you are top school like Alabama. I believe the players on a college team who do not have a NFL future would place considerable value in closing their careers with a bowl win.
The players who are good enough to play in the pros are letting their teammates down if they choose to bail from the game.

I like the way you keep speaking for the players on the team, as if you have any place to do so. You don't have a damn clue what they think or how they view the guy choosing to focus on his career.

Rather than putting their best foot forward toward winning the Camping World Bowl, WVU gets to get start their future early and get some reps for Allison, who might be really good. The team can rally around the idea that Grier didn't make them. Is this really that big of a problem for the team?

Grier is making a business decision and NFL teams appreciate guys that are professionals.

I doubt it. It would likely hurt draft status.

Not saying it will happen, but it wouldn't surprise me. Projected Top 5 pick, freakish talent, self-centered, getting fluffed daily by ESPN...rolls the dice thinking he can make up any lost ground at the combine. Same kind who signs that huge rookie contract, then holds out for more money after Year 2.

Yeah...it'll happen. Eventually.

It is a character issue and exhibits a "Me" only mentality. Call me old school, there is some merit for a team commitment. That mentality also has merit in the military. I stand by my opinions.

I totally agree with you. Ya know, West Virginia took a chance on him to begin with, after Grier showing he was a person of questionable character after intentionally cheating with performance enhancing drugs at Florida. I heard more than once this season how he has matured since then and shown what an upstanding young man of character he is.

I hope no pro team drafts him.

This happens all the time. Its because of the play-offs. If you aren't in the top 4, your bowl doesn't matter. So skip it.

Hell, didn't Clowney sit out the whole season before going pro? Sitting out a bowl game that has no title implications isn't that big of a deal and nothing new. Fournette and McCaffrey sat out their bowl games a couple of years ago and are doing just fine.

Good grief. He took something he bought at Total Nutrition. He wasn't shooting up in a roid lab!

His problem was he didn't tell the UF staff and get their OK. There was an ingredient in the product he bought that was added to the NCAA ban list.

One of the most selfish things I ever heard. It is like an NFL QB skipping the last game of the season because he knows he is going to play for another team the next year. He is letting his WVU teammates, coaches and fans down.

Yeah, except 1 minor difference. Those NFL QBs are millionaires. Grier hasn't made a single penny.
