Will Spurrier Dominate Again?

How many East Crowns will SC win in the next 4 years?

Where is the choice for zero?

Spurrier can come in and vastly improve SC to being an 8 win team and STILL finish 3rd in the SEC East. I think it will take at least 2-3 years to get SC to a point where they can compete for the SEC East. And at age 60, I don't think Spurrier will be around long enough to build any dynasties.

Spurrier did take his 1992 team to the SECCG... but only after Tennessee dropped 3 straight games despite victories over both Florida and Georgia....

1992 SEC EAST
Florida 6-2
Georgia 6- 2
Tennessee 5- 3
South Carolina 3- 5
Vanderbilt 2- 6
Kentucky 2- 6

The bulk of Spurrier's success occurred between 1993-1996, when he won 4 straight SEC Championship Games. It just so happened that heisman winner Danny Wuerffel played all four of those seasons. It also did not hurt that ONLY 1 team (Tennessee) in the Eastern division was competitive (had a winning conference record) during that time.

1993 SEC EAST
Florida 7- 1
Tennessee 6- 1- 1
Kentucky 4- 4
Georgia 2- 6
South Carolina 2- 6
Vanderbilt 1- 7

1994 SEC EAST
Florida 7- 1
Tennessee 5- 3
South Carolina 4- 4
Georgia 3- 4- 1
Vanderbilt 2- 6
Kentucky 0- 8

1995 SEC EAST
Florida 8- 0
Tennessee 7- 1
Georgia 3- 5
South Carolina 2- 5- 1
Kentucky 2- 6
Vanderbilt 1- 7

1996 SEC EAST
Florida 8- 0
Tennessee 7- 1
South Carolina 4- 4
Georgia 3- 5
Kentucky 3- 5
Vanderbilt 0- 8

Beginning in 1997, Florida lost their grip on the SEC EAST. For one, Wuerffel was gone, and a 3rd team in the SEC EAST became competitive again (Georgia)...

1997 SEC EAST
Tennessee 7- 1
Florida 6- 2
Georgia 6- 2
South Carolina 3- 5
Kentucky 2- 6
Vanderbilt 0- 8

1998 SEC EAST
Tennessee 8- 0
Florida 7- 1
Georgia 6- 2
Kentucky 4- 4
Vanderbilt 1 - 7
South Carolina 0 -8

Spurrier did return to the SEC Championship, but not with the same results... losing to Alabama in 1999...

1999 SEC EAST
Florida 7- 1
Tennessee 6- 2
Georgia 5- 3
Kentucky 4- 4
Vanderbilt 2- 6
South Carolina 0- 8

He did win one more in 2000...

2000 SEC EAST
Florida 7- 1
Tennessee 5- 3
Georgia 5- 3
South Carolina 5- 3
Vanderbilt 1- 7
Kentucky 0 - 8

But in 2001, Spurrier lost out with one of his better teams....

2001 SEC EAST
Tennessee 7- 1
Florida 6- 2
South Carolina 5- 3
Georgia 5- 3
Kentucky 1- 7
Vanderbilt 0- 8

Since then....

2002 SEC EAST
Georgia 7- 1
Florida 6- 2
Tennessee 5- 3
Kentucky 3- 5
South Carolina 3- 5
Vanderbilt 0- 8

2003 SEC EAST
Georgia 6- 2
Tennessee 6- 2
Florida 6- 2
South Carolina 2- 6
Kentucky 1- 7
Vanderbilt 1- 7

2004 SEC EAST
Tennessee 7-1
Georgia 6-2
Florida 4-4
South Carolina 4-4
Kentucky 1- 7
Vanderbilt 1- 7

I don't see Tennessee, Georgia, or Florida dropping in competitiveness. If South Carolina becomes more competitive under Spurrier, he won't dominate. However, they might pull out an SEC Crown every once in a while.

I don't think so... We've got a Tennessee team that will only get better, Richt with a still-talented UGA team and Urban Meyer taking a hold of the Gators. SC will go nowhere with that bunch.

No. I genuninely think Tennessee will be the team to beat in the SEC east in the coming five years. We're young, already won this year and will only continue to get better. And that's coming from an objective standpoint, not just as a Vols fan.

UGA is still a very talented team, however, and Richt's squad will be very tough to beat for every team in the conference. I also have a sense that Urban Meyer could very well bring the Gators back to having a reputation as being near-unbeatable in the Swamp.

Spurrier is good, but if they think that he can make their team quickly top the second best division in the country, they have another thing coming. I think the highest they will get is second place, but to beat out Georgia, Tennessee and Florida in the same season will be a miracle.
