WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Well-connected public figures report that they have been told recently by Rudolph Giuliani that, as of now, he intends to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.

The former mayor of New York was on top of last month's national Gallup poll measuring presidential preferences by registered Republicans, with 29 percent. Sen. John McCain's 24 percent was second, with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich third at 8 percent. National polls all year have shown Giuliani running either first or second to McCain, with the rest of the presidential possibilities far behind.

Republican insiders respond to these numbers by saying rank-and-file GOP voters will abandon Giuliani once they realize his position on abortion, gay rights and gun control. Party strategists calculate that if he actually runs, he must change on at least one of these issues.

What ya think? Will he change on those topics, and regardless will the GOP back him enough to win the nomination? We all saw in 04 that if the PARTY isn't behind you, you will fade fast. As much as I dislike Dean, "the Scream" wasn't enough for the voters to actually turn on him. It was obvious to me that the party threw him under the bus, promising him the chairmanship. Will Rudy suffer a similar fate?

Rudy's appeal is that he will probably run well in New Hampshire and come out of the gates in good shape, but I don't see him getting much further in the primaries. Unless he tempers some of his positions, he's just way too socially liberal for middle America. :twocents:

As has been said many times - the best candidates for the vast center of America will never make it through the primaries.

I don't know if Rudy G. is the right guy but he'll never make it through.

The Republican nominee will probably come out of nowhere. I just have a feeling.

I forget what the circumstances surrounding Bush getting into the hunt were. I was 12, so I really didn't care.

Bush came out of nowhere . . . if you didn't read a newspaper from 1998-2000.

Bush has admitted to never reading the newspaper. Then again, if I were him I wouldn't read them either.

If I was a two term President, I'd have someone read to me.

True, but at least you could read them yourself if need be.

You have your buddies Al Gore and John Kerry to thank. A ripe political climate is a terrible thing to waste.

Can't blame Gore. Afterall, he did win in 2000. That's all I have to say about that.

Gore won? After two recounts proving Bush won and then the Supreme Court also ruling that Bush won? However, you are right, that is all you should say about that.

I am hoping that Condoleeza Rice wins the Republican Nomination. Either her or Brownback...

I don't think Rice quite has enough of a record to run, but she would make an excellent VP for somebody.

I like George Allen of Va, he seems to be a true conservative (though bush did also). Until a true leader emerges, I will keep looking toward the western sky, waiting for the return of Ronaldus Magnus.

As long as the Democrats and Republican Parties are putting people in the White House, you'll never have a "true" anything.

Conventional wisdom is that social conservatives will not support Rudy and his 'liberal' background. But keep this in mind. Rudy is a key component of Ralph Reed's campaign here in GA. I'm sure Reed will return the favor. It seems in his hatred of McCain and as revenge on the Senate Indian Affairs committe report against him, Reed will go full steam to push Rudy despite his liberal history. Reed wants nothing more than to see McCain fail. Seeing McCain pander to the Religious Right, I'd say Reed will fight fist, tooth, and nail to make sure Rudy gets help. If Reed loses his race here in GA, he will make this his PRIORITY ONE.
