I don't know what the status of this bill is. It looks like it was filed last year. The last status report is from an eduction subcommittee ... so maybe it died there. Does anyone know any details? Essentially, this bill would require UT football to schedule MTSU or Memphis every year (or even worse... a 1AA).

Any of the volnation want to pull out the law degree and comment?

The Fiscal Note points out that this bill only affects the UTK football team, and with a negative fiscal impact. I don't understand the idea behind this at all. There is no stated goal to obtain by this bill.

I didn't take the fiscal note to say that it only affected UTK. On the other hand, I did take the fiscal note to say that the only institution that would be affected FINANCIALLY would be UTK. Basically, I thought they were saying that any other TN school could play another without a financial consequence.

This is just legislators from other regions of the state wanting their piece of the pie. I think it is bogus, we already play Vandy. We scheduled Memphis a ton, but I don't think it should be an every year thing. They need to leave these decisions up to the NCAA and the respective athletic directors.

You may be right...but the fiscal notes state that it would result in a net loss of money for the state...which makes it seem like no body is getting any pie. But, maybe it would still mean that a non-UTK school would get some money that they otherwise wouldn't .... even though the net loss for the state would exist. And....Vandy doesn't count with this bill....just UT and TBR schools.

This is about the stupidest thing I've ever read. I wouldn't look too much into it. There is no way the bill would pass.

on the other hand, playing MTSU, TN Tech, Sewenee, Maryville College, ETSU and Carson Newman would certainly provide padding for all the stats.
wouldn't help much otherwise, leave it to politicians to come up something that stupid.

It would only turn us into 2004 Auburn if we pulled off an undefeated season.

This is just wrong. What is the point? I don't see an upside to any program, at least in football. I would just think that no one would ever think of voting for this, except that I live in Washington, DC now and see that stupid stuff happen all the time.

Wow...wouldn't that be fun to watch :zeitung_lesen: ..... and btw....only MTSU, TN Tech, and ETSU would count as far as the bill is concerned :birgits_giggle:

Well we certainly wouldn't lose to ETSU as they dropped football a year ago.

Tennessee Tech...

The Battle of I-40!

According to the UT athletics website UT is

1-0 vs. MTSU (only meeting 2002)
36-2 against UTC (last meeting in 1969)
5-0 against TN Tech. (last meeting 1951)

There are some other public TN schools listed but I do not think any of them play football anymore. I dug a little deeper and found that UTC last beat UT in 1958.

They played Carson Newman way back in the day.

But it seems like if we had to schedule one Tennessee team a year we could say Vandy is that team.

I didn't read the links, so it might say something other wise.

This was written as a state school issue. It has to be a school from the UT system (Martin or Chatt) or TBR (Memphis, Tenn. Tech, Tenn. State, MTSU, ETSU - who as was pointed out quit football...I had forgotten about that). So, considering we would only want to play a 1A team...this means Memphis or MTSU.

I'm sure the bill is dead...but I just thought it was crazy and had to post it. I thought maybe someone would know if in fact it was dead.

Any bill from 2005-06 is "dead" since the General Assembly is adjourned. Only way this can come back up withou being refiled as a new bill in 2007 is if Gov. Bredesen calls a special session on the issue of in-state football mandates, like the special session on ethics they had in January.

I have heard that a/several (?) state senators from the Memphis area did the same thing in the 1980s. It never passed but UT started scheduling Memphis more often. That's the rumor anyway.

Thanks Hill...that is the sort of analysis I was looking for! I didn't know if a bill was alive until oficially voted down by committee or if it died if no vote had been taken by the end of the GA's session. Thanks!
