Auburn finally acknowledged Friday it has hired Willie Martinez as a defensive assistant coach after a week in which he attended staff meetings that set the course for spring practice and the fall. He'll coach the defensive backs.
Martinez joins defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder for the fifth time. They have also coached together at Georgia, Central Florida, Central Michigan and even a high school in Boca Raton, Fla., early in their careers. Martinez also knows head coach Gene Chizik.
"I've had the pleasure to know Coach Chizik and other members of this staff for a long time and I share their energy and passion for the game of football and developing young men," Martinez said in a statement.
That's one hell of a defensive coaching staff with Chizik, VanGorder, Martinez, Thigpen, and Pelton.
