KNOXVILLE Tennessee starting center Major Wingate hurt his right foot in practice Sunday night and is questionable for Tuesdays game against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Wingate, at 6-foot-10 the tallest player in the Vols rotation, appeared to twist his ankle drawing a charge against forward Tony Passley. Wingate yelled in pain after hitting the floor, where he stayed for about five minutes before gingerly walking off without help. He didnt return to practice.
"We were just about ready to shut them down," coach Bruce Pearl said. "It might have been one of the last contact things we were going to do, but we cant not practice just because our numbers are what they are.
"Two days before the game, youve got to be able to go."
This latest spill was similar to one Wingate took during practice Thursday. After a collision near the bucket, Wingate lay clutching his knee. But he wound up returning to practice and started the following night during the Vols 106-83 victory over East Tennessee State.
"The other day was much less than it is today," Pearl said. "He was down there for a while in pretty good pain."
The injury comes at an especially bad time for Tennessee, considering 6-10 senior center Michael Southall has returned to Louisiana-Lafayettes team after missing last season with legal and grade problems.
A former Kentucky and Georgia Tech signee who lost spots at both programs for drugrelated arrests, Southall led the Ragin Cajuns with 15 points in a season-opening 65-47 loss at Southern Indiana.
Hendrixs plea wont earn return
Dismissed Vols forward Jemere Hendrix wants everyone to know hes sorry.
Standing in the student section during Fridays game, Hendrix wore his old practice jersey and held up a T-shirt with a handwritten message apologizing to fans, teammates, athletic director Mike Hamilton and Pearl.
Pearl noticed Hendrix in the crowd, but said Sunday he isnt considering allowing him back on the team.
"Never experienced that before," Pearl said. "Right now, its not something Im going to address other than the fact I did see it, and I dont think he was doing anything maliciously. I think he was being honest. He was trying to send a message in a way a young person might."
Pearl has not been approached privately by Hendrix, the coach said.
Hendrix was kicked off the team in October after an off-court altercation with former Vols football player Daniel Brooks. Hendrix was already on suspension after being arrested in August for marijuana possession and driving without a license.
