Wow... I guess Childress is going to get a lot more playing time than I thought. Surely there are some big guys on campus that can play a LITTLE bit of forward and walk on to the team!!! :scare:

Here's a writeup from the Chattanooga Times Free Press (11/21/05).....

Center Wingate injured in practice
By Gentry Estes Staff Writer E-mail Gentry Estes at gestes@timesfreepress.com

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee starting center Major Wingate hurt his right foot in practice Sunday night and is questionable for Tuesday’s game against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Wingate, at 6-foot-10 the tallest player in the Vols’ rotation, appeared to twist his ankle drawing a charge against forward Tony Passley. Wingate yelled in pain after hitting the floor, where he stayed for about five minutes before gingerly walking off without help. He didn’t return to practice.
"We were just about ready to shut them down," coach Bruce Pearl said. "It might have been one of the last contact things we were going to do, but we can’t not practice just because our numbers are what they are.
"Two days before the game, you’ve got to be able to go."
This latest spill was similar to one Wingate took during practice Thursday. After a collision near the bucket, Wingate lay clutching his knee. But he wound up returning to practice and started the following night during the Vols’ 106-83 victory over East Tennessee State.
"The other day was much less than it is today," Pearl said. "He was down there for a while in pretty good pain."
The injury comes at an especially bad time for Tennessee, considering 6-10 senior center Michael Southall has returned to Louisiana-Lafayette’s team after missing last season with legal and grade problems.
A former Kentucky and Georgia Tech signee who lost spots at both programs for drugrelated arrests, Southall led the Ragin’ Cajuns with 15 points in a season-opening 65-47 loss at Southern Indiana.

Hendrix’s plea won’t earn return
Dismissed Vols forward Jemere Hendrix wants everyone to know he’s sorry.
Standing in the student section during Friday’s game, Hendrix wore his old practice jersey and held up a T-shirt with a handwritten message apologizing to fans, teammates, athletic director Mike Hamilton and Pearl.
Pearl noticed Hendrix in the crowd, but said Sunday he isn’t considering allowing him back on the team.
"Never experienced that before," Pearl said. "Right now, it’s not something I’m going to address other than the fact I did see it, and I don’t think he was doing anything maliciously. I think he was being honest. He was trying to send a message in a way a young person might."
Pearl has not been approached privately by Hendrix, the coach said.
Hendrix was kicked off the team in October after an off-court altercation with former Vols football player Daniel Brooks. Hendrix was already on suspension after being arrested in August for marijuana possession and driving without a license.

Sounded like Wingate had a pretty decent game tonight with that bad foot. I'm glad he toughed it out, we needed him tonight.

Yeah it was a gutsy effort for Wingate. It was clear that he was not 100% bc/ he wasn't moving too much to get open under the goal and he wasn't running the transition game like he was against ETSU. He was a defensive force in the first half with 3 blocks.

I was at the game and was surprised and relieved when he started. We lose without him.
