Witten Camp in Elizabethton

As a few of us upper East Tennesseeans know, Jason played high school football for the Big Orange Elizabethton Cyclones. If someone else can update me, I only know of two Elizabethton Cylcone players that played for the Vols. The other was a QB for the Cyclones from 1959-1962 and a WR for UT from 1963-1966 and set records that time frame on receptions in a game for 12. That players name is Johnny Mills who was QB at EHS the same time frame the Steve Spurrier was a QB at Science Hill (Johnson City) Hill School Hilltoppers.

i realize elizabethton has orange in their color scheme, but I've never heard them referenced as the "big orange" cyclones. They love to promote black as their primary color. If anyone local to this area is "big orange" it's Sullivan Central. That said, long live the red and gold!

also kind of craptastic that the JC Press fails to mention that Sensabaugh is a Kingsport native. Although I think after this offseason, he might quit claiming it as his hometown.

Gerald was on the D-B team that beat the crap out of Witten's Cyclones.

and I'm not necessarily defending 'Betsy here, but it's worth noting that D-B is more than twice the size of Elizabethton enrollment wise.

Yeah, I wouldn't normally remember that win with great pride, but we were supposed to be destroyed in that game.

The only thing I remember about Witten at Elizabethton is when my hs knocked them out of the state playoffs my freshman year. If I remember correctly, winning that game sent us to the state championship game.

that's likely. 'Betsy went to the semis three straight years back then.

I don't know who told you that you were supposed to "be destroyed", but our boys never should have played that game. As a parent of one of the notable players on that team, I can say that many of the parents were opposed to the game --we didn't need to play a team that wasn't even in our category --I believe the game was planned to generate more buzz about the Cyclones --but all it did was put a lot physical hurt on our players. We had a great team full of outstanding players. We didn't need to prove anything to DB. It was a bad decision.
Not only that. We are all very proud of Jason. But, to hear all the talk now, Jason was the only one on the team. Jason isn't the one making all the remarks of how he "led the cyclones to the semis" etc... He probably wouldn't ever take any credit away from his Brother or any of the other team mates. These boys all grew up together and began playing ball at the age of 5 or 6 years old. It was a special group of players.
It was a team. I love Jason and Michelle --and you won't meet better people --but he was not the leader of that team --he was one of a tightly devoted group of friends who all had skills.

One team that "knocked us out" was tacky enough to show up at the opening of our Basketball season holding signs that referenced our loss to them in football --It was ridiculous and showed bad sportsmanship. Believe me --they felt bad enough all ready. :unsure:I think the team was Cougars maybe?

One of the cheers that we always did was "Go big orange"
Only because it was one of our colors. Any color for a team is called attention to like that.
