Joe Biddle wrote a piece on the WKU VB team. They were headed south on 65 towards Mobile. The driver (who was separated from the passengers by a black curtain) had a heart attack while the team was resting/sleeping. Coach felt the "rumble strips" that are located directly outside the lane-lines. What they didn't realize is they were in the middle median. The bus then bounced and bumped its way back ACROSS both south lanes and to the outside median. The coach finally found his way to the "cockpit", where he realized the driver was on the floor and unresponsive. Coach reached over and grabbed the wheel, then climbed over and managed to depress the brakes, bringing the runaway bus to a hault. Witnesses say its a miracle the bus didn't flip. What a hero that coach is. I bet he doesn't have any trouble asking his squad to trust him. Man o man.

Yeah, that was huge news here in Bowling Green. On top of that, the coach drove the bus on down to Mobile afterward and the team competed in their match. Talk about a hell of a trip.

Hadn't heard this. Thanks for sharing. Definitely could've been a bad situation turned worse.

Don't take this the wrong way; I'm not trying to be disrespectful at all.... But, have you ever noticed that the vast majority of coach bus drivers are elderly men? I don't know how old the guy was driving the bus, but more than likely he was up there in age.

Oh gosh! That is scary!

I go to WKU, but I didn't hear anything about this until I read this thread. Wow.

I'm glad the team is okay, and my prayers go out to the family of the driver.

Hello all!

I stumbled on this forum while Googling articles from the bus accident.

My daughter is a WKU volleyball player, she was in the very back of the "sleeper bus" watching a movie when this happened. From what she told me it was a moment of pure terror, and that how a bus going 75 MHP could cross the median twice on I-65 and not get into a head on collision or flip is a miracle!! There was nobody driving the bus for at least 30 seconds until the coach pulled the curtain and dove for the wheel.

The coachs timing was just about perfect and without a doubt Travis Hudson saved the bus and the lives of everybody on board. My wife has been crying everyday ever since this happened, it is hard to believe that nobody else got killed ir hurt after the driver passed away.

Regards....
