recently moved to NC for a promotion.

caveat: i lived in e tennessee for 30+ years.

WNC bills itself as a tourist destination, and having worked as a public servant i can attest it IS a tourist trap. everything here is set up to make money off of the public.

Maybe im bat**** nuts. but 1 hr west of asheville sits some of the most beautiful "country", (yeah the country), in all the US. Tennessee is God's country.

Why doesnt Tennessee take advantage of it's beauty. Free parks? good roads? good schools? open country? beautiful rivers? well manicured yards? no income tax? no right to own tax? ( ok ok i digress)

one may think that based upon sheer natural beauty that from a sheer tourism standpoint that we would have WNC beat. and **** is so much cheaper here.

people are jumping over themselves to visit, and settle in asheville area. if it were me id mosey over to tri cities, or knox, tn and save my $.

sorry nclinians

Tennessee has no jobs. A 9% sales tax. Absurd alchohol prices. Apparently you haven't been to Gatlinburg or pigeon forge lately.

Not exactly sure what the OP is trying to say, but the scenery is better around Asheville than it is around Knoxville.

Yeah, I am a bit lost as well.

I like the TN side of Deals gap better than the NC side.

ill see ur 9.5 sales tax and see u no jobs, a bunch of know it all yankees, a 7 % sales tax, horrible roads, right to own vehicle tax, emissions tax, income tax, increased water and sewerage use taxes, highway tax, property tax, charges to enter public domains such as nc arboretum, increased ins costs...

theres a reason why our 100 yr old courhouses look new. i like it here but tn is nicer and has a much cheaper standard of living.

college is cheaper, daycare cheaper, doggy day care more inexpensive, better roads for runners/bikers, alcohol may be cheaper but thats bottom of pole.

im happy to be here, but find myseld traveling to tn to hike or bike or fish on one of the many free and seldom used trails.

east nc may ne diff tho

I'm not sure how he thinks Asheville beats Gatlinburg & pigeon forge on tourism. Asheville a nice modern mountain town that has a lot of events & some areas worth visiting but I doubt anybody plans a week vacation there. Maybe a weekend getaway at best. You could throw Cherokee in the mix but everybody knows what that's about. Both have a little to offer depending on where you're at & what you like to do.

grove park inn, downtown, biltmore, french broad, 10+ breweries.

trust me in with u, but we have more northern ans floridian transients than i can mention. peeps come here ans they stay (leafers)

ill back off the tourist trap idea. but, wnc has a TON of tourism. even from charlotte, raleigh, wilmington, boone, winston and sc.

its crazy

I kinda see where you're coming from now. Yea it's pretty much the same in SC. Every state gets you one way or another.

i didnt feel that way in tn mayn.

a lot of native ashevillians move west to erwin, marshall, jc, kport, brevard tk escape the taxes.

i get it tho, most states have higher taxes. shouldnt complain. tn being the one out

Leafers need to come early this year. It's been warm and dry in Linville Ridge all summer. Lost a few 30+ year old laurels this year.
