Now before I get bashed, womens basketball is not a joke. I just had to have a title that people would read. What is a joke, however, is that ESPN and the media are saying that UCONN has the longest win streak in basketball history. They don't. They have the longest win streak in Women's Basketball History! It is not the same thing. There are probably 15 programs in America that put any money into women's basketball. There are over 100 in men's that put money into the sport. That means that during UCONN's streak, they played 2% of teams that were on a level playing field. You don't compare women's softball to men's baseball. Why are we grouping these 2 very different sports? I think that it is disrespectful to Coach Wooden to do so. However, I would also argue that it was easier for him to do what he did back in the day when teams still started 5 white guys alot of times too. I am not trying to piss off any of you ladies, but saying that men's and women's basketball are equal is a complete joke.:cray:

I don't think anyone is saying that men's and women's basketball is equal. Most people I've heard talk about it on ESPN agree that it's comparing apples to oranges. But give the uconn women a little credit, whether or not it's comparable to the men's record (which it's not), it's still an incredible accomplishment to win 89 consecutive games in any sport. And I really don't have a problem with them getting the coverage for what they've done. Second of all, to say "its disrespectful to Coach Wooden", give me a break. I find it incredible that for all the lip that the uconn women get for even being mentioned on ESPN, you never hear jack s*** about Coach Wooden's brilliant cheating efforts that it took to keep them on top anyway.

The whole thing is pointless, IMO. Is this streak comparable in any way to the UCLA teams? No. But is it a heck of an accomplishment? Yes. And I certainly don't have a problem with this story getting as much coverage as it has. Especially when UCLA's streak was tainted in my eyes and in the eyes of many others.

If Geno had any balls whatsoever, he would've taken a job at a men's program by now. You can tell he know this, too, because of all the whining and excuse-making he's done in the past week.

If cheating could get you that many wins in a row, Calipari would have never lost a game. I did mention that Wooden's record was from a different era. I probably shouldn't have said that it was disrespectful to him. I am not trying to say that UCONN's streak is not an accomplishment. I really just don't like it compared to men's basketball. I am a Lady Vols fan, but Pat Summitt should not be compared to Coach K, Bobby Knight, Boeheim, or any other famous men's coach. If a tree falls in the woods and lands on a women's basketball team, would anyone notice?

Agreed. He is not a basketball coach. He is a women's basketball coach.:birgits_giggle:

I imagine Calhoun and Edsel giving Geno a wedgie or knocking his papers in the floor every time they see him.

I'll give them credit for the amazing streak because to win that many in a row in anything is pretty amazing not to mention thier average victory margin is like 30pts against alot of ranked teams. Comparing them to UCLA is a joke oh...that's where I draw the line.

UConn has the same opportunity afforded all WBB programs, to schedule the toughest teams possible to not only improve THEIR image but to create the most exciting matchups possible throughout the WBB regular season..They choose to play a softer schedule than most top tier programs with the end result being this type of streak...Year in and year out, CPS and the Lady Vols play one of the toughest, if not THE toughest regular season schedules in WBB...Entering this season,47% of her 1,233 total games have been played versus ranked teams (582 total games against ranked opponents) with 423 victories versus ranked opponents:

Overall: 423-159 (.727)
AP Ranked 1-10: 174-120 (.592)
AP Ranked 11-25: 230-37 (.861)
ESPN Ranked 1-10: 131-77 (.630)
ESPN Ranked 11-25: 196-26 (.883)

Vs. Unranked Opponents
Overall: 614-37 (.943)

Auriemo is 735-122 overall, but just 127-52 against Top 25 teams...Only 179 games against ranked opponents...IMO not exactly a tough schedule for the type of program they project to be...

Geno might have the streak but IMO Pat Summitt has the respect..

Why should he? He's the best at what he does, and he's lapping the field. Again.

I understand womens hoops is an acquired taste, but I'd think a Tennessee message board of all places would understand and appreciate the accomplishment...it probably explains all the Haterade drinking in this thread.

Agreed. This is only a womens record for wins, not basketball wins, because you cannot compare the two. Geno would have to go undefeated for the next 20 years for him to be equal to Wooden in my eyes.

Why should Geno take a job at a men's program? He is dominating his sport, and there appears to be nobody to challenge his program right now. He's just going to keep winning championships and laughing all the way to the bank. Geno would be an idiot to leave UCONN.

However, anybody comparing him to John Wooden is outside of their mind.

UTM men's team would beat this UCONN Lady Husky team...Handily...

They have just been adding on to the WOMEN'S RECORD ever since they passed 70...ESPN has been comparing their record to UCLA's and it's just not the same thing...

Yep.

Back then UCLA plowed through a couple bottom feeders out west before advancing to the Final Four. The "West" region was comprised exclusively of left coast teams.

I also love how no one dare mentions Sam Gilbert when discussing UCLA basketball's glory days.

I agree it's not the same thing, but what good does it do to compare how a women's team would fare against a men's team?

I think Wooden helped Darick Rose's (SP?) entrance exam. Tack another 6 games onto Bruce Pearl's suspension.

I think it's funny when people say UConn has the all-time division 1 basketball win streak.

There's absolutely zero parity in women's basketball. Not really impressed.
