against ucla and blows a potential win. They have a one goal lead in the second half, but then mysteriously stop trying to possess the ball and chase UCLA around the field. When they get it back, they kick it long, back in UCLA's end, the Bruins get it--and the Vols start chasing again. Long story short, because they never tried to possess the ball and make UCLA chase the Vols get tired and give up two goals very late and lose the game. Really dumb soccer. When you get the ball, try to keep it and make the other team run a bit. I'm not sure what they were doing.

That's just how college kids want to play. They don't understand possession. It's the americanization of soccer.

Do you know anything about how Soccer is supposed to be played? Because it has no semblance whatsoever to what you mentioned. This is not U-3.

How exactly is soccer supposed to be played in your opinion? Brazil has been pretty succesful playing possession soccer.

Brazil also has three of the best ten soccer players in the world at almost any given time. They have the ability to hold the ball, get off just a few shots, and still beat teams by two or three goals because their offensive players are good enough to get the ball in the goal.

We U.S. players don't have near the raw talent as they do, as such we need to be taking twice as many shots as them (if not more) if we hope to score. Aggressive offensive play while maintaining possession is key to winning with a less talented team. It's the Full Court Press of the soccer world.

I agree but playing long passes to no one over the top is not smart, aggresive soccer. In the game the OP is discussing, UT had the possession edge until they started playing longball, almost like they were playing from behind.

Sounds like we went into "prevent" mode. Happens in all team sports at all levels...and the results are not usually good.
