Wondering about Cutcliffe

I was wondering if anyone else questioned why if Cutcliff was so dead set on a HC job he went down a step. Here is some wondering thoughts I have had. Everyone knows Cut wants a HC job, so does he love TN and CPP so much that he would pass on a possible oppurtunity or was there no other choices out there? Did Mike Hamilton make some closed door promises to Cut, such as saying he will have the HC job when Fulmer is gone (which might be soon). Did Hamilton tell Cut that if he turns it around the job as HC is his? Would you really want to hire an OC that you know you will lose in two years and be back in the same situation as before? Notice how Cut and his family have buried there roots here in east TN. It just all seems too much of a coincidence to me. Cut didn't just come back here to bale his first love out the hole or because he had nothing better to do. Just thought I would get some of your opinions.

I thnk part of it is that he does have some roots in Knoxville and they guy just had major heart surgery. Maybe this is the best job he can get in a comfortable environment. Sometimes quality of life issues are more important than the salary or job title.

EVERY offensive coordinator wants to be a head coach; especially guys who have had a taste of being a head coach. I'm sure he surveyed the landscape and saw that this was a good deal for he and his family. I personally hope that we win 10+ games the next two years and Cufcliffe has the option of leaving for a head job if he so desires.

There haven't been that many coaching changes this year either - that probably plays more in it than anything else. Besides - if he plays his cards right he could be the successor at TN.

I don't call this a quick fix -- I call this CPF covering his big rear end!!!

I keep saying this over and over again, but what is everybody so suspicious and scared of? Assistant coaches come and go all the time. That's just the way it is. I don't think there is any such thing as a long term plan for assistant coaches.

Exactly. He's probably more concerned about his own health. He's obviously content with setting up shop in K-ville by moving the family here and working the sportstalk circuit. He can stay here and rebuild a broken down Offense and even tack more on to his resume. Given a few years of this, he could get any job out there on the market. So he has a lower stress job, nice town to live in, good potential to pad the resume, and increase his stock out there. It's clear that this season there weren't very many openings out there. He's a patient man. He's biding his time.

I agree good luck finding an OC who doesnt want to be a head coach some day. I'm not even sure I want an OC who doesnt think he is good enough to be a head coach somewhere.

I herd he was really interested in who got the HC job at Kansas (Or was it Kansas State :dunno: ). Once the job was filled he gave his nod to accept theOC at UT.

Any truth to this??

This job was officially filled after Cut announced coming to UT. Not sure if unofficially this was known prior or not.

More than likely, with his health recovery and having to forego the OC job at ND due to his health, and the lack of coaching rollover, he probably didn't have any real offers that would pay any better than UT OC, and anyone that would be interested will wait and see how his health holds out before commitiing a contract. If he holds up and revives the O, and Myer falters, look for UF to be interested in 3 years. Even if only slight interest. Cut has the goods.

i'm pretty sure cut took the job of offensive line coach at ND, no offensive coordinator. i still think unless he can perform a miracle with ainge he's going to need crompton to step up or maybe mustain to step in { if he's at UT } for tennessee to turn it around. the reason he took the job, knoxville is his home and nobody wanted him as a head coach.

Prior to his heart problems, Cutcliffe was in fact the Offensive Coordinator and QB coach at Notre Dame.

Who in their right mind would hire Cut to coach the offensive line??? I'm sure he could do it but that would be kind of a waste.

this is definetlys cut's job to lose. fulmer may have 5 more years left and cut or coach chavis have to be the only ppl that they would give this job to.

I don't know that Cutcliffe will be around long enough to see Phil's retirement. Cutcliffe is only 5 years younger than CPF, and we know he want to be a head coach again, so I'd guess that if he resurrects the offense he'll probably be gone within 2-3 years.

Cut gone in 1-3 years, yes and maybe no. Some realize CPF has a contract and know when it ends(it will be honored by the University), bar extentions i dont see him extending past the current one. Im very sure CDC is aware of the status of CPF personally.

If CPF stepped down/out before is ETS, or planned to has already been discussed. The phat phill people of the world make me sick! Just so its clear. Agree, disagree all fine and dandy. CPF writes his own contracts.

There was a lot of speculation that Cutcliff would be the leading candidate at Kentucky if Rich Brooks was fired after this year. He is a good recruiter, respected offensive mind, had success at Ole Miss, and has a personal history with UK AD Mitch Barnhardt, who has brought in others with UT ties (Mickey Demoss.) Of course, Brooks announced around Nov. 1 that Brooks would remain next year, so that door closed. That, coupled with the dirth of obviously enticing coaching vacancies this year, helped lead Cut to decide to take the OC post at UT and wait for the right opportunity, especially since the UT vacancy really needed to be filled quickly after the season for recruiting purposes..

It will be interesting if the Uk, or other similar spot, opens up next year, but in my opinion, it doesn't really matter that we only have him for a year or two. I would rather have a good offensive mind in that position for a year or two than not at all, and I don't know of any obvious candidates to fill it this year were he not available.

Just my 2 cents.
