Now that I've moved into a new place with a giant basement, I've started to dabble in woodworking. I know there are others on here that enjoy wood, so let's chat a bit, k?

On Sunday, I made a pantry storage shelving unit. 32"x12"x5' It fit perfectly in the hall space. It's nothing to show off, as it's just 4 pieces of 1x12 pine slid down on 4 5' pine long closet rods. The rods turned out to be warped a little bit and my hole saw skills are not very good (wish I had a drill press), so once the shelves were pressed down they are never coming apart again. However, it's utilitarian and works well. I wanted to paint the shelves white and stain the legs, but that's not happening now. Heh. If anyone wants to see, I'll post pictures.

My next project is a coffee table since the only piece of furniture I have is a small dresser. The coffee table is going to be rectangular, framed from maybe oak or something, with a glass inlay, and the legs are going to be recycled BMX bike forks.

After that comes a night stand. Then a small kitchen table made from reclaimed wood or wood from a barn.

Anyways, what have you guys made? Pics? Plans? Future projects?

Anybody else here woodwork? I’m dabbling right now. Made an entryway table. Working on a side table and some shelves. Nothing fancy just rustic farmhouse style with SPF. But after sitting behind a desk all week it’s nice to make some with your hands.

Anybody here making anything cool right now?

Last fancy thing I built was a picture frame out of purple heart. As beautiful as that wood is it's awful to work worth. Probably gonna build a new shed for the backyard soon and maybe dabble in some finish carpentry soon, maybe some barn doors in the house. Finish is definitely where I'm weakest in my job so gotta do something to get some practice on it.

Purple Heart is pretty. What difficulties did you encounter using it?

And same for me with regard to finishing. I do not know if it’s my prepping or the weather but my stains are not coming out like I’d really want.

Purple heart is an extremely hard wood that requires a ton of small steps to get what you want done like gradually using larger bits until you get the right size hole. Took alot of trial and error until I figured out the process, snapped a ton of screws on my practice piece. It also seemed to get burned/scorched very easy from cutting or routing and I couldn't sand that out. Had to route just a little bit at a time until I got down to the right depth. It turned out too that the sap ate up my skin, got a few small splinters in my finger tips and my skin peeled off all the way down to the knuckles over the next few days. Probably just an allergic reaction to it on my end. Oddly using a biscuit joiner on it wasn't bad at all.

It wasn't the worst experience in hindsight and honestly alot of the issues were more than likely because I had never dealt with it before but the end product made it worth it. If I can find the picture I'll post it in here.

For the record the worst wood I have ever dealt with was arsenic treated wood. We had to throw up walls in some warehouse with it and that was hands down the worst experience ever.
