With the inaugural tournament now in the books and the Japanese team walking away as the WBC's first champions it's time to hear some thoughts on how you felt it went. There's been a lot of discussion about the timing of the Classic. I don't really know as if there's a better time than during Spring training to hold the event. I think if they were to try and hold the tournament any time near the All Star break the owners would immediately balk at the idea. Especially those team owners who have a shot at a penant race would oppose the idea. If the tournament were to be held after the World Series, the majority of the players who play in MLB would have to try to come back and play after sitting at home for nearly a month. I doubt that would go over very well either. However, the problem that I saw with the tournament being held in the Spring would be what I felt was total complacency on the American teams part. They looked like they could care less if they won or lost. It looked to me like they were just going through the motions and trying to get ready for the MLB season with little thought about the outcome of the Classic. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the tournament. The good and the bad.

The first thing that I thought of for the whole tournement, was that democracy won over communism. And yes I am being quite serious. Bud Selig has pretty much drowned my infatuation with baseball.

Meaningless tournament, another in a long line of bad ideas by baseball's current rulers.

the WBC was almost and absolute failure thanks to Japan beating Cuba becuase had they one Castro would have said that our World Series means nothing and that they have the best teams in the world which ya i guess Japan can argue that but they arent out to get us like Cuba is, but our USA team didnt show pride or willingness to do it all for a win they were acting as if it were spring training which i understand this is the first time they have had to come out and throw 95 in March and throw some curve balls and field players have to give it 100% which i dont believe they gave,i think it would have went better if it were in November because for say an injury such as Washingtons pitcher it would be in the off season and they could heal now the Nationals have to the whole season without a key pitcher to go along with all their Alfonso problems so i think this one was a failure hope to see them perform better in '09'

Baseball, next to Hockey, is the worse run sport, management wise.

Why would you let a used car salesman run MLB? :banghead:

A used car salesman is the only MLB CEO that can sell a bounch of low profile dope bandits to the American public as sports heros. Come to think of it, a NEW car salesman could do that. Our standards and expectations of public figures are beneath even what we hold true for ourselves, and speak out about. Clean up baseball.

I was actually pulling for Cuba to win the thing once they made it to the championship game. The irony of them possibly winning it after Selig and the US Government wanted to originally keep them out of cracked me up. I realize some try to politicize it, as Selig did, but this is just baseball.

It's not like the government wanted to keep them out of it because of competitive reasons. We've been a little sideways with the Cubans ever since Castro let the Soviets use his island to point nuclear warheads at us.

I understand that, but the Cuban baseball team didn't have anything to do with that.

That, and they didn't want the US to lose to Cuba. Too bad they didn't even get the chance to play. Should probably look into banning Canada and Mexico from the next WBC...

I agree, but that's the way embargoes work. . . No tourism, no cigars, no baseball.

That had absolutely zero to do with it. If that was the case, we would have never competed in an Olympics against a coomunist country.
