270 MPH? 0-186 MPH in 14 seconds? Crazy!

Hennessey Venom GT claims top speed record for USA at 270 mph | Fox News

This past Valentine’s Day, racing driver/test engineer Brian Smith piloted the 1,244 hp supercar down the Kennedy Space Center’s 3.2-mile Space Shuttle landing runway to a maximum velocity of 270.49 mph, and was still accelerating when he ran out of room and had to hit the brakes.

and in typical American fashion, it's done without a sanctioning body present and a "you'll have to take our word for it" attitude

C'mon MG, even you have to be a bit impressed even if it isn't "officially" sanctioned.

And it's a nice looking car as well.

I was far more impressed by James May driving a Veyron to its top speed.

You're right that the Venom is a nice looking car.

While the top speed is stunning it's essentially useless in any practical sense. What gets me is the 0-60/2.7, 0-100/5.6 and 0-200/14.51.

Would make driving through Kansas tolerable at less than 2 hours depending on the line at the toll stations on I70.

In theory perhaps but you'd need thousands of dollars worth of tires laid out along the route. If I remember correctly the Veyron was only good for about 15min at top speed before the tires were shot. (and let's not even talk about the fuel consumption at those speeds)

Yeah. I have some issues with the record and the car.

Apparently they do not produce enough to be considered a production vehicle and they did not do the run in both directions.

Also not a fan of the looks. The car it is based on the lotus Elise looks much nicer in terms of proportions. The long space following the cockpit just looks odd to me.

Finally I am not a fan of Hennessy as a tuner. I have heard a lot of negative things about their customer service and I'm not really wowed by what the produce.

Sorry for all the negativity. At least they used a good ole GM motor for the job. :)

1.2 million dollars will buy you a small plane capable of similar speeds, including flying lessons

That SOB probably parted out a dozen customer cars to fund this thing. Be amazed if he got 5k miles on it before a melt down too.

If they hadn't held the flag out the window it would have gone to 285. :)
