.....and name the regular season champs the auto-bid? This won't necessarily affect the BCS schools as much as the smaller schools that are pretty good(Davidson, Winthrop, Virginia Commonwealth, George Mason, etc.).

I really don't hold a specific position on this, although, it would be interesting to see how the strategy changes to make the tournament.

Opinions? Thoughts?

No. It gives the lesser teams a chance to play their way into the tournament with the auto bid. Reg season champs most likely get in regardless.

Did you break into a cold sweat thinking about this at 3:30 this morning?

It's a valid question. They did away with the tourney for a long time before bringing it back in the early 80s. I like it a lot. It's a fun 4 days of MM-style basketball.

Winning it also bought Dennis Felton about 20 more games. ;)

Would definitely strengthen the 'AA tourney field.

The only benefit to doing away with the conference tournaments is that the 1-bid leagues would always get their best team into the Dance. But, those leagues will never want to give up their annual moment on ESPN. And, it is a fun event when we're not ducking tornadoes.

It gives those leagues a prayer of getting 2, which is generally a travesty.

Not really. When was the last time the SWAC, MEAC, or Patriot got two teams in the field?

I don't mind them except I dislike the committee treating them as an extension of the regular season. My related wild idea is to pick the field of 64 just prior to the conference tournaments and seed/rank the teams 1 to 64. Then all those teams that win their tourney and aren't already in get in and you peel out the same number of teams from the bottom.

I wish they would get rid of them, but they won't. I feel like the regular season gives ample opportunity for teams to show what they are worth.

Sure Georgia gave us all a feel-good story, but in the end they were a lame duck NCAA tourney team that took another team's spot that did more to earn it.

I'm not talking about the total backwater conferences, but it helps guys like the CAA, SoCon and such.

When was the last time the Southern Conference got two bids? The CAA has performed well enough in the the Tournament to justify the bids they get.

They might, but regularly we end up with talk of it being the only way that x number of teams get there from y conference. Luke this season, anybody but Davidson wins the SoCon, 2 are getting in.

with all this talk of the CAA, I just want to mention that Old Dominion beat rival Virginia Commonwealth 69-65 yesterday. Gerald Lee led the way for my Monarchs with 18 points.

7 teams are within 2 games of first place in the CAA.

I wouldn't bet on that. They have pretty much nothing on their resume to merit an at large bid. Anyone can play tough teams and lose. Davidson's only worthwhile win is over West Virginia the night Mazzula got hurt.
