...if a substantial number of Vol fans...say 100,000...each contributed $10 annually to a fund and then gave that fund as a salary topper to the coach? So say we have a million bucks in the fund and UT is willing to offer $4.1 million to Gruden/Strong/Jim Bob Cooter to coach the Vols. Then the fund puts the coach's income at $5.1 million per year. Illegal?

As much as we here all want a great coach, should we leave it up to the university to fund it? Or do we, as fans, pitch in? I'd pay $10 and forego a McDonald's meal with the kids one day if it meant we could get a quality man on the sidelines.

why don't you just donate $10 and designate which fund you want it to go towards?

Because then it gets filtered through the system and ends up paying admin costs. I envision a separate fund that is viewable by all donors, so everyone sees exactly how much is in the fund at any given time. It would just be a bank account. No substantial admin costs involved.

Perhaps it could be a commitment account wherein you commit $10 to the fund provided a coach is hired that is on your approved list. If Gruden is hired and he is on your list, your account gets tagged for the $10. If Gruden is not on your list, you pay nothing. It would be pretty democratic because then we would see exactly which coaches we want the most...not that we are really wise when it comes to coaches, but you get the picture.

In theroy it sounds like a great idea. Although who in the world would you trust with the funds? This is why you have big boosters. You hope that they put the big money up for the small folks. Look at the Haslam's. How many of you buy your gas from pilots or flyin j's? How many of you do it because you know they dump millions into UT? I know I buy my gas from there.

We could call it ITPAY (I Pay Ten A Year)! Oh wait, Clemson already did that.

You can't get that many people to commit to anything.
Even if they did, they wouldn't stay committed.
Fans are a lot like recruits in that way.

Only illegal if the coach doesn't report it to the IRS

I think it would be pretty cool to have a fan based money market account set up so we can create our own reserve fund. Have a counsel that has access to the account that can actually move the money as the donors see fit, however everybody with a vested interest has view only access. We will never have much power in decision making as individuals, however as a group, we could make our mark. Then if it is set up correctly, many employers, like my own, will match contributions. Any sort of decisions on the use of money requires a 2/3rds vote. We can take the red tape and bull **** out of the current donation process. Who's with me?
