Bowden was playing a little different game then too. He wanted to play anyone anywhere because in order to win a title in those days you just had to play people and make that resume look good. FSU was also independent, which meant no conference title game - they didn't even have those in the 80s yet anyway.@yankee vol is right. At FSU Bowden said “I’ll play anyone anywhere”..... and did.
1981 FSU played @Ohio Stare, @lsu, @NotreDame, @Nebraska, and @Pitt in consecutive weeks.
