In the 8th inning, Tennessee was down 3-1 and I thought I would wait until the game was over and compose a post about my thoughts on the game. The gist being, it might not have been the outcome we wanted, but I liked the way the team competed tonight.

My thoughts at that point were:

The defense was MUCH better. Yes, Lindsey dropped that toss in the 1st, but it didn't end up hurting us and we made some great defensive plays, as well. Ahuna made two great plays off the top of my head. Moore's scoop and shovel was beautiful. And Lindsey even picked off a runner.

The pitching was really good. Lindsey gave you all you can ask. Cam bounced back well. And this was before Burns came in. I'll get to that.

Where we struggled, of course, was hitting. And that's concerning. But we did have a lot of hard hit balls right at guys. And Vanderbilt...which is a fantastic baseball team...made some outstanding defensive plays. Keep hitting the ball hard and the hits will come.

But the main thing is, we competed. The vibe from the team just felt different. They went out and played baseball the way they're capable of playing. No base-running nonsense. No looking lost on defense. We went out and competed nose to nose with a top 5 team in America, against their Friday starter and just came up short. I can live with that. Keep doing that, and the wins will come. At the time I had all these thoughts, Maldanado was on the bump for Vandy. He'd given up 1 run all season. He's an automatic door-closer. Nice effort, but we lost. Maybe tomorrow.

Then the 9th inning happened. Tears hit that home run and I had no idea it had happened because, like everyone else, I had to wait for my feed to come back. He knocked the snot out of that ball. But then Denton struck out. With Ahuna batting, I told myself, "don't start believing. You're just setting yourself up for disappointment." Then Ahuna K'd. Then I saw that Dreiling was pinch hitting and y'all know he's my dude. So I still didn't believe we were going to win, but I wanted to see him at least get a hit and keep it going. I was ticked after the BS strike 2 call. Then boom. I have no idea how he golfed that home run out, but I was ecstatic. I jumped up, scared the cat who had fallen asleep lying against my leg, and shouted loud enough for the neighbors to hear (my wife is out of town).

When Dickey hit that ball off the wall to lead off the Bottom 10, I thought it was gone. But I was certain we'd end it that inning when it turned out to be a double. No such luck. Fortunately, Chase Burns looked like 1985 Doc Gooden. And when Merritt gunned down the leadoff hitter for Vandy trying to stretch a single into a double, I just thought it was our game. Didn't realize he'd also hit the walk off.

So many good things happened involving guys who needed good things to happen in areas in which we needed good things to happen. Merritt getting both a huge HR and defensive play, Burns pitching the way he did, Ahuna playing great defense, the TEAM playing great defense....but mostly this team showing so much GUTS and perhaps learning that if they keep pushing the rock, good things will happen. Even against he best closer in the SEC. This win so huge psychologically. I think/hope our season just turned. Now let's just get one more this weekend...a sweep would be magnificent, though. Vandy has used up their best starter and best closer. They have to face Dollander and Beam the next 2 days and we still have Halvorsen, Kirby, Combs, Joyce, Russell, etc. available out of the pen. I like our chances.

Incredible win; potential season changing win, outstanding moment to bring the team together. Dreiling is a DUDE. My goodness..a freshman! Merritt showed tremendous grit with the huge throw and gigantic HR. Tears came through in the 9th. Just terrific effort and solid defense as well. LNS crowd came alive as well! What a night!

Great post. But do we have Joyce available?

I was on the edge of my seat in the ninth. You ever get that feeling that your team is going to win but you can’t really explain it? That’s how I felt. Something felt different late in the game. We kept the game tight and the pitching gave our offense an opportunity at the end. Baseball is a such a great game. You can get shut down and only get 2 hits the entire game and then with two swings you are tied. I’ve always said that if you have seen that Drew Gilbert home run then I don’t know how you could ever count our guys out. Tony is not going to let them give up.

Selfishly, Im sad I missed it. But I’m so happy for the team and Volnation tonight. It was tough not getting down on this team after the past few weeks.

Huge win….. baseball season ain't over yet. Just gotta keep chopping wood.
Sorry you missed it, but Yogi said it best:

I have to admit that I have only watched a few games this year but last night felt different. The team just looked more confident like "this is just little brother" we can take them. Fun game to watch, I thought it was over in the 10th but the ball hit the top of the wall and stayed in.

Thanks GA! I was at the ballpark all night and listened to a little here and there, the rundown is much appreciated.
Now, let’s go take this series and get this season back on track!!

It was good to see Coach V's team playing with passion for a change, this season, unlike last year, sees the other teams have wanted the game more than the Tennessee kids, in the SEC, you're no better today than you were yesterday such that you have to play hard every pitch, every swing every play every game. The conference is that good in baseball now and half of the teams in the college world series could easily be from the SEC (again)

I felt like, until the ninth inning, this game was a microcosm of the whole season. Vandy made three insanely good defensive plays on hard hit balls. We kept hitting things right at them, and kept striking out. I am a big observer of body language, and as the outs piled up, I watched our guys walk to the dugout with their heads down time and time again.

Personally, I didn’t necessarily feel the vibe per se, as much as I saw continued hard effort throughout. I kept believing and hoping that something somewhere might just happen. Something had to finally happen, right? Those guys have been through everything imaginable this season….so many potholes. They’ve never quit, but I know they’ve been disappointed, and being a college athlete these days is complicated.

Sadly, as the bottom of the ninth came around, quite a few had left the stadium. I’m not trying to judge anyone because I know the disappointment people are feeling at that point, but I stood during that whole ninth inning and watched as Tears (he’s my avatar and has such great extension) blasted a shot to center for a home run. With two down, I watched a young freshman who has a stroke that belies his age, get a ball down in the zone and tie it up.

The rest, finally, was history. We had the vibe going on again from the 9th through the 12th, and it was a thing of beauty and pure joy. I’m tired, but headed for some breakfast and the stadium for another game today with a lot of gratitude to the guys for their grit and determination.

Go Vols!

The home crowd got that win last night.
You know our guys had to be pretty depressed at how the season has gone.
Then to see such a large and exuberant crowd turn out had to lift their spirits tremendously.
Vol fans are a different breed. Once we fall in love with someone (like we have Vitello and Heupel), we are ALL IN.
