Imagine attacking defenses 4 wide with Matthews and Brazzell on the outside and Branch and Staley/Boo in the slot. Put Davis at TE and motion either Branch or Boo across the backfield pre-snap and you can put some major pressure on a defense...especially with the added threat that Nico can run. Pre-snap motion with dynamic players in the slot...sign me up.
Whoa, whoa with your radical talk about pre-snap motion

How about we have them all compete for the two spots. We should not make a habit of promising players a position without having competed to earn it, with occasional exception(s). Imo, Turrentine, while solid, is not lock down-a-position, elite.
You're not going to believe this, I'm not in charge of playing time. I'm just going to assume the guy that started the entire year has the inside track to start again. I'm not a huge Turrentine fan or anything, I'll just assume he's going to start until he isn't. I'm sure he's not promised anything

Iā€™m skeptical weā€™re willing to spend to land Branch. But Iā€™ll say this, if we did land him and kept Matthews and also saw Boo play some offense next year, there will really be zero excuse for Pope if he canā€™t get some explosive playmaking from that unit. It will be put up or shut up time.
And that might be the point being made. The WR room is cleaned up and flipped. The talent is there, how are you going to use it?

So exactly what makes this guy elite? High school recruiting rankings? 2 years of college stats against bad competition don't scream elite.
That is a valid question, He was a freshman all american. hes an outstanding punt returner. He has great speed and insane twitch. Something we havent had at the WR position since.... Patterson? Not saying he is going to come in here and light the world up because we truly dont know, but talent wise its worth the risk. Especially since we are really thin at that position now.

He sure is quick! I am not agreeing with this opinion, but seems I read in many of the ā€œgood riddance Squirrelā€ posts that he was too small to absorb the collisions and stay healthy in the SEC. How does this young man compare to Squirrel in that regard?

If larger framed so be it. If similar it seems worthy of mentioning that it canā€™t be both ways.

- So Branch is the most electric athlete in the country

- Lewis is apparently the fastest kid on the team.

- Boo and Staley are quick as lightning as well.

- Then you have Matthews and Brazzell.

- Kit and Davis coming back at TE.

I meanā€¦thereā€™s your weapons Nico plus whatever other options we go after. JAllen said we are looking at others
Hopefully the OL drastically improved it all this will be for naught

Noā€¦.they arenā€™t? Matthews isnā€™t a slot receiver. Branch is. If by same guy you mean extremely talented and athletic than yes you are correct.

Starting Matthews and Brazzell outside and Branch in the slot would then allow you to rotate in Staley and Boo as needed. Boo will likely be a player used in special packages and not a true WR anyway.
Boo, Matthews and Branch are bascially the same guy.. they have things they are better at than the others but they are all 3 dynamic players with the ball in their hands. Matthews is a more complete WR he can play outside but trust me if Bru and Thornton were to come back Matthews would be the in slot. Boo same deal he has the size/strength to play outside but he is more likely to be used in the slot since he wont be full time at WR. Branch is a slot guy because of his size.. The big differences between the 3 of these guys are not that drastic. They are all 5'10-6' 190-200 dynamic get him in space guys. Basically Velus Jones (who is now a RB in the NFL).

We might lose Mathews though

Boo and Matthewā€™s are not anywhere near branchā€¦. Not Velus 2.0, even then would be worth the risk.

I think of Squirrel as quick, but in straigtline route running with maybe a good cut or two.
I don't think of Squirrel as making too many defenders miss. He just beat guys to the edge or to a spot.

I think of this Branch kid as quick twitched, make a man miss fast. You give Branch the ball and he can turn a short catch into a long gain.

...yet he hasn't done that yet in his 2 years at USC. 10.7 yds/reception.

Squirrels' one big problem was when he's facing the QB say on a curl or button hook. It doesn't matter where the ball is thrown high or in the chest, he jumps or leaves the ground. It gives the defender a better shot on him. Willams freshman for Bama catches and make 2 cuts before Squirrels feet hit the ground in comparison.

Maybe some of our receivers who entered the portal knew this was in the works and that influenced them to move in.
This might be like what happened with the wholesale upgrade of the secondary last year.

Listen, if Swain likes him and thinks he'd be a great add, I'm on board. Dude played WR here, knows what it takes not only to play at UT, but also at an elite level in the SEC because of who all he played with and the coaches he had. He's been consistently spot on with his analysis of UT's WRs over the last decade from listening to his various shows.
I remember watching him in the Polynesian Bowl, last year, this year against LSU and I've wanted him since.

I'm shocked he hasn't produced more, but literally any game I've watched that he's played in he's flashed big time. Home run in this offense.
