He is not the one that recruited these players....

He is not the one that is supposed to inspire our players to hustle and play with heart....

He is not the one that should have to tell our center that he should play under the basket on offense rather than at the top of the 3 point line....

Its not his fault that we got outrebounded by 24 tonight, since he himself couldn't get any rebounds.....

Its not his fault that our half court offense consists of 4-5 passes around the perimeter followed by someone chucking up a 3. He's not supposed to coach half-court offense, right?.....

He is not the one that refuses to bench a player when they show consistent poor shot selection and/or lack of effort....

He is not the one that has our players giving no effort on defense, resulting in consistently good offensive performances from our opponents.....

So I'm just tired of people blaming him. Do you not remember what UT basketball was like before he came along? We had coaches like Jerry Green, that recruited highly ranked players who turned out to have no work ethic, and our teams underperformed and always lost by the 1st or 2nd round of the tournament.

So please, try to realize that you know nothing about basketball if you blame Pearl for any of these things that are clearly not his fault. Thanks.

I hope you're kidding. Pearl is a great motivator, but his game strategy skills have always left a lot to be desired. I've said that since he got here. His half court offense IS pushing the ball downcourt and settling for the outside shot. See the last 4 years of Tennessee basketball for reference. We just had better outside shooting in the past (a la Lofton and Smith). As for him not recruiting these players, who do you think did? He came in 2005, and the current senior class graduated in 2006, meaning that he did in fact recruit/sign them. I'm not blaming him completely for this loss, but don't abscond him of all fault when his teams continually underperform come tournament time due to lack of coaching and clutch play down the stretch. I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but it's the truth, and hopefully the VN users who actually understand basketball will see my point.

If you are trying to say the coach rewards for bad play or poor shot selection and just forget about blocking out. well is this not the way the school system works. welfare basketball uh did I say that. treedog

The original post was a sarcastic, tongue in cheek response to the other "if you blame Pearl" thread. And I think the word you're looking for is absolve...absolve - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

why go all over the country, give away $100,000 for a scholarship to some guy who cares less about anyone but himself. who is not even thankful enough to give full effort in a game he loves to play. Give the scholarship to a kid who stays out of trouble, stays away from drugs and did not knock up the girl next door and then call her a ho. we got this thing wrong!!!!treedogvol

There's the flame I was looking for. And thank you for correcting my diction. I'll be sure that in the midst of a long rant I don't accidentally use the wrong word from now on.

Thanks,
A UT graduate
Wasn't intended to be a flame, friend.

Oh really? Is that why the team has been sleepwalking the past 5 games?

just curious why it is that Pearl had better teams when he had less talent? these bunch of pansy wanna be thugs make me sick. somebody needs to knock woolridge upside the head for that ridiculous hair and tell him to learn how to play. our pgs are pathetic, we have No outside shooters, or legit big men. rather watch dane bradshaw out there, at least he hustled. watchin scotty hopson step out of the way to let a guy have a lay up gets old, and watching them jog back when the ball is already across half court is absolutely disgusting. I'll probably watch this team only a few more times, against teams who actually have a coach to see how they do. but i won't watch many more games

I'm saying that's what he's known for. And I'm ignoring the comments about the "obvious sarcasm," since all it takes is one comment and everyone on this board jumps you. Some fan base we have.

I don't see how you can blame him. I lined out in my original post very clearly why he is not at fault. In my opinion, he should definitely be absconded.

Pardon me for expecting more hustle from my team than what I have seen this year.

I wasn't talking about your comment, except for saying that he is known for being a motivator. I wonder sometimes if he wouldn't be better suited as a motivational speaker living in a van down by the river than a basketball coach at a major university...

I love coach Pearl, but I do blame him for not lighting a fire under the asses of the usual suspects.

That's settled then.

I don't blame Pearl for this loss today. This game was all on the players. We had a HORRIBLE day from the field and our D hasn't been great all year. T.Smith was shut down today and to be honest, he has been less than impressive this year. Pearl can't play for the guys, he can only put them in position to make plays and today they just didn't make plays.

It was tough to see a coach like O'Neil beat Tennessee. We are 10x better than we were when he was here.
