All right, I'll be the contrary guy. If we're going to hyperventilate and spasm over "saves," then there's no reason why "holds" shouldn't be regarded as a meaningful stat too. Most modern "saves" don't occur without somebody successfully performing a "hold" beforehand.
I put them both in air quotes because they're both stupidly arbitrary. The only difference is that "holds" have been treated with the contempt that they deserve, while "saves" have corrupted the game by screwing with the way managers use their bullpens. Bottom of the ninth, three run lead, bottom of the order coming up? Cue "Enter Sandman!" Chalk another one up for Scott Boras! But nobody's agent goes into FA negotiations talking about how his client is indispensable because of all the holds he chalked up.
