I decided to setup this thread to discuss the coverage between MLB Network's MLB Tonight and ESPN's Baseball Tonight. For over 15 years, Baseball Tonight was the predominant highlight show for happenings from around the league until last year. The MLB Network came into the baseball scene and just showed programming that even ESPN was not able to show. I also liked how their flagship show is so extensive with their coverage. On-air talent has been outstanding with Harold Reynolds, Matt Vasgarsian, Greg Amsinger, John Hart, Mitch Williams, Tom Verducci, and Jon Heyman. Their first season, added Bob Costas to do documentary work and call games. Their second season, added the baseball God, Peter Gammons; which is a huge addition to the network and gives it further credibility. They also added newcomer John Smoltz for ballgames and recently have added Chris Rose from FOX to do studio work and Ken Rosenthal from FOX as well. NOTE: Those two will remain with FOX's baseball coverage.
However, the MLB Network is missing a few pieces to the lineup. I would like them to add Karl Ravech, Gary Miller and Dave Campbell from ESPN. I am disappointed they did not add Chip Carey to their baseball coverage. Seth Everett, who I thought would be a lock for the MLB Network, would be good as well.
I have to say MLB Tonight and their branched specials such as 30 Teams In 30 Days and Hall Of Fame Induction coverage have just been far better than Baseball Tonight. Baseball Tonight's quality has suffered due to the on-air talent. It's pretty much past its former glory when they had Chris Berman and his nicknames.
As a hardcore baseball fan, I have pretty much flocked over to MLB Tonight and only have seen Baseball Tonight once this season. I'll still watch baseball games on ESPN but other than that.
I am excited for the season to start and I look forward to the games and the memorable highlights.
You can talk about FOX's coverage as well on this thread. I have seen the comments from baseball fans around the net.
