How have we fared against zone coverage teams? We lit up man coverage against Bama, LSU, Pitt, etc, but can't remember who has tried to play a zone against us. Kentucky will run a zone and try to limit big plays. I know Vols by fiddy, but curious what the stats say.

Sounds like confirmation of what many said in the other thread. Take away deep shots, take away the middle, push the throws to the outside, come up and tackle on short catches. If they make those long/intermediate outside throws with consistency, you just have to live with it.

I'll be curious to see how we use simulated pressure. With the pace we won't have time to disguise anything. Plus with the splits we won't be able to bring secondary guys.

---And This----
They’re going to score 35+ . Our team just needs to expect that and not get down when they score . And just because they may go up by 14 doesn’t mean our OC can crap the bed and stop running the ball . That’s when we’ll get boat raced . we have a very good defense. They could play a perfect game and we’d still lose imo. Tennessees offense is that good and our offense leaves a lot to be desired.

these two statements above sum up the ball game for KY.

the beauty of our offense is that with the pace we go and the WR split all the way out, defenses cannot disguise coverage well against us. That lets HH know which WR is most likely to be open when we come to the line. If for some reason the #1 WR is covered then #2 is most likely open. With our offense it does not matter so much zone or man as we know what the D is doing when we come to the line and adjust accordingly.

Pitt went to zone during the game. That is when Hyatt caught several underneath throws in the flat for multiple first downs. I think they switched back after that.

I feel like we will do this a lot vs. UK, methodical passing in small to intermediate chunks up and down the field. KY won't want to give up the explosives and make us "earn it".

The difficulty with the splits we use is that even if you run a zone concept, it becomes a psuedo man coverage because everything gets pulled so wide and out of the middle. If they try to "cheat" coverage then our advantage becomes numbers in the box and we run the ball. I've been trying to figure out how to defend our offense and truthfully it is an absolute nightmare for defenses. Much of this is credited to HH because he does an amazing job of recognition when he comes to the line. That's my two cents:)

The only way to play our offense successfully would be man coverage and get pressure with your front 4. With the splits we have it makes it nearly impossible to disquise a corner or safety blitz. When teams have brought LB blitz's our free lineman, TE's and RB's, especially Small, have done a great job of picking it up. LSU, Bama and Florida thought they had athletes at DB that could match up with us and if any of those teams could have gotten some pressure maybe they could have, but they didn't. Kentucky will most likely play a lot of cover 2 zone, try to keep everything in front of them and hope they can open field tackle and we make some mistakes. They have two problems with that, one with both safeties over the top we should be able to rip off big runs, and two if you miss a tackle on a WR in space they will house it on you just as fast as if you got beat over the top. CJH has shown in the Pitt game if you want to play soft zone we're happy to take the 6-8 yard completion and see if you can get us on the ground before we get it to the sticks. We still get our fiddy, it just takes 8-9 plays per drive instead of 3-5. ITS GREAT TO BE A TENNESSEE VOL!

Go back and watch last years game and you will have your answer. They tried this last year and we absolutely murdered them on those bubble screens.

With our WR speed, we'll still get behind them.

Hitting the quarterback is the key to stopping Tennessee. Whatever you want to call your coverage behind it doesn't matter. It won't work if we have time to throw.

My understanding, according to the analysis I have seen, placing four WR outside the numbers forces the defense to plan man coverage. And then we torch them.
