1. Texas- Is this fair to Georgia that they went on the road and beat an SEC team while Texas kicked a mid major's ass to switch spots? Maybe not. But Georgia played poor enough that Texas gets the #1 spot this week. Their defense has really impressed me to start the year.
2. Georgia- You could make the case for Tennessee or Ole Miss here, but Georgia has earned the benefit of the doubt. Did you know Georgia has won their last 3 games in Lexington by a combined 22 points? And the most points they have scored in a game is 16? And they have scored a combined 43 points? Mark Stoops is 0-3 in those games.
3. Tennessee- 3-5 is really interchangeable at this point in time. I went with Tennessee since they're averaging the second most points in the country and haven't given up an offensive TD. They need James Pearce to be last year's Jame Pearce and Nico's first SEC road game should be a good test for him in Norman.
4. Ole Miss- Ole Miss had 297 yards in the 1st quarter and took the throttle off from there. Still not completely there yet with the Ole Miss defense but I think Kiffin's team can outscore anyone at this point.
5. Alabama- The Tide finally got the passing game going and Milroe's deep ball was there. I was impressed with their defense as well; they haven't lost a step. Man, how fortunate to have a bye week before the Georgia game to really hammer out some of the smaller things to clean up. Hey, did you know Ryan Williams is only 17???
6. Missouri- Watching the Tigers and wasn't overly impressed with them although they had a solid grasp on the game. The two interceptions Castellanos threw really doomed the Eagles. The Mizzou pass defense gave up a lot of chunk plays but they really stifled the run game. I personally didn't see the one of the 10 best teams in the nation, but they deserve this spot.
7. Oklahoma- I think the Oklahoma coaching staff would privately tell you they got lucky their first three games were against non-elite opponents. The defense is very good, which is no surprise under Venables. But man, that passing game continues to flounder. 5.6 yards PER ATTEMPTED PASS??? Against Temple, Houston and Tulane? And you face Tennessee next week, that better get fixed quick.
8. LSU- I doubt Brian Kelly was sweating bullets around 5PM on Saturday since his contract is fully guaranteed but man that heat had to be sweltering before he saw that flag for the late hit on Nussmeier on that pick 6 that was called back. I still think LSU is a nine-win team but I am slowly losing faith, and I can't imagine this staff believes they have a playoff caliber team.
9. South Carolina- Yes, Shane Beamer, I understand you lost your starting QB and that called back pick really killed you. Yes, your kicker missed a game tying FG by inches. Yes, two lost fumbles is just unfortunate luck. But also, if you're not going to be an offensive or defensive guru and be a "CEO-type" head coach don't have 13 penalties for 123 yards and go 3-12 on third down.
10. Texas A&M- Sure Florida is not a good team but that was a good win for Elko that they needed. They controlled that game, the score was not an indictor of how TAMU handled Florida. Also start Marcel Reed the rest of the year.
11. Arkansas- The diatribe of the week goes to Arkansas. So Sam Pittman is on the hot seat. They had UAB giving them hell in the 4th quarter. But here is my question with Arkansas. If Pittman gets canned, where do they even go? Texas & Oklahoma joining the conference really screwed them as much as anyone. Who's going to line up with potentially having to play Oklahoma, Texas and TAMU every year? How are you expected to make the playoffs when you're not a top 10 program in your conference? I'm not arguing Pittman is some sort of genius, but I just don't see the potential for the program as an attractive job. Somebody will take an SEC job of course but if you're a major coordinator or good G5 coach (Jason Candle for example), I don't see a path to viability for Arkansas to be a top 15 program in the country. And top 25 will be difficult.
12. Kentucky- A valiant effort by the Wildcats in Lexington after most people assumed they would be destroyed by Georgia. They can't throw the ball but they'll give you hell on defense and run enough to keep it respectable. You got to wonder where that fight was against South Carolina.
13. Auburn- Bad news? You gave so much confidence to Cal Football that they've now taken over the twitter college football sphere. Good news? You beat a college football team from New Mexico, something you didn't do last year. That's technically improvement!
14. Florida- The fact Billy Napier gave Graham Mertz snaps over DJ Lagway is a fireable offense. But man, can you give me something dude? Can you give me a little fire? I get your laid back but for the love of God don't die laying down!
15. Vanderbilt- Oh Vanderbilt. You could have started 3-0. A bowl game was in view! It wasn't impossible! You had a chance! And you lost to Georgia State in Atlanta...wait...in Atlanta??? (checks notes)...why the hell did you schedule a game against Georgia State in Atlanta?!?!?!?!
16. Mississippi State- I joked a couple weeks ago I thought Miss State would give Texas a game. I would like to rescind that statement immediately. Also...has the gap between the two Mississippi programs ever been wider in the history of the rivalry?
