Here’s what we learned yesterday about a few guys suspected to be on Donnie Tyndall‘s radar.
–Tariq Owens doesn’t have an official visit scheduled to Tennessee at this point, according to his dad, but there does seem to be at least “some interest.” He visited Temple yesterday.
–Willie Carmichael has been officially released by Southern Miss from his national letter of intent. “@_williec24: Had to make a tough decision that I felt was better for me and my family,” he tweeted. He told Ben Frederickson, “That would be first on my list if it’s possible,” when asked about following Tyndall to UT. “But I’m waiting to get released so I can talk to other coaches again.” In a Southern Miss press release from when Carmichael signed in November, Tyndall said, “Willie is a long, athletic, front-line player. He can play a couple different positions. He’s a great athlete who plays with a high motor. He reminds me of a young Kenneth Faried, in that he plays extremely hard. He runs the floor and is not afraid to compete at the highest level.”
–Kevin Punter was scheduled to arrive in Knoxville for his visit around 3pm yesterday.
–Jalen Steele, former Fulton High School star who played at Mississippi State has officially signed with MTSU and won’t be an option for Tennessee, Jesse Smithey reported.
After the signing of Jabari McGhee yesterday, the Vols still have five scholarships available. More on McGhee:
–Coach Tyndall had this to say about Jabari McGhee after he officially signed with the Vols: “I’m very excited to add Jabari to the Tennessee basketball family,” Tyndall said. “He’s an outstanding young man who will bring length and size to our frontcourt. His toughness and competitive edge will allow him to contribute early in his career.”
-Jabari McGhee’s Hargrave coach: “Jabari is a definition of a true warrior,” Hamilton said. “Relentless on the glass and makes winning plays, Led our team in block shots, rebounds, charges and deflection.”
FOOTBALL RECRUITING
-2015 Florida athlete Ryan Davis, who the Vols offered this week, says he will visit Tennessee. “I’m definitely, for sure (visiting) Tennessee,” said Davis. … “It will be high on my list. And I definitely could possibly see myself there, and I want to see how it all goes.”
-Tennessee offered 2016 Georgia running back Elijah Holyfield, who is the son of former professional fighter Evander Holyfield. “2016 RB Elijah Holyfield of Woodward (Ga) has picked up offers from MissSt, Indiana & #Vols,” Michael Carvell tweeted.
