Worley among nation’s most-sacked quarterbacks

When I saw John Adam’s latest headline, “UT needs to give Worley a week off,” I assumed it was just “Adams being Adams” by writing some snarky column about Justin Worley‘s less-than-perfect performance on Saturday when he threw two crucial interceptions and fumbled after failing to read a Florida blitz. Against my better judgment, I clicked on it.

Adams wrote:

Give quarterback Justin Worley the week off. Don’t play him this Saturday against Chattanooga. Don’t even practice him.

If he wants to attend practice, have a recliner waiting on him at Haslam Field. Transport him in a golf cart.

Extreme? Maybe. But so are the hits that are piling up on UT’s quarterback.

He brings up a good point in that Worley has been sacked 18 times this season in five games, which puts him on pace for total of 42 this season.

I’m not sure where to find stats on which specific quarterbacks have been sacked the most, but I did find a list of sacks allowed by team. Tennessee ranks 119th out of 128 schools.

If that weren’t bad enough, Worley wore a sleeve on his elbow against Florida because of lingering effects of a helmet-to-elbow shot he took against Georgia.

So, in your opinion, should Butch Jones sit Justin Worley against UT Chattanooga? Post your comments below and let me know your opinion along with your reasoning.

  1. If one of the other QBs is more mobile, I really think CBJ should replace Worley. Worley has been truly courageous, and he has played well. But, no QB could survive a full season taking the beating he is taking. If one of the other two has any scrambling ability at all, it would be an act of mercy to replace him. I fear he could be seriously injured against Alabama or Ole Miss.

    • You mean replace as in naming someone else the permanent starter?

      • Worley is taking a beating for sure,He is amazing to me ,he is a true leader of this team, the Vols will go as Worley goes

they either need to go to a 2 back set or have 2 tight ends all the time,to try to slow down the beating he is getting,he won’t last the year at this rate

  2. I said this after the UGA game. CBJ should absolutely rest Worley. Sure to Budda, our line can block UT Chat and establish a 200 yard rushing game and let Peterman throw a few slants, screens and pass into the flats just to keep it interesting.

I’m assuming he’s trying to protect Dobb’s redshirt.

    • I tend to agree at this point. If we do see Worley, which I’m sure we will, I hope his time on the field is limited. Same with Hurd.

  3. I think we should start Dobbs this week, not only to rest Worley but to get him some reps for next year. Odds are that Peterman and Dobbs will fight it out for the starter position next year, regardless of how well the 2015 recruits fare. Dobbs seems to be a suitable fit for us to at least try some QB options.

    • Based on the rumblings, it seems Butch might be hoping to redshirt Dobbs at this point.

      • yea I think the idea is to red shirt Dobbs,so i don’t expect to see him this year

  4. No, he should play his normal game. He should get some rest in the 2nd half. Really, all you have to do is consider the source of this hare-brained idea and you know how dumb it is.

    • Fair point on the source. However, I’m definitely hoping we don’t see Worley in the second half. Thanks for the comment.

      • hopefully the Vols jump on them hard in the first Quarter and Worley gets the rest of the game off

  5. Seems like it ought to factor in that, after Florida, Worley is #22 in the nation in completions in spite of the sacks (?)

    • That’s an impressive stat all things considered. Thanks for sharing PrescottAZVol.

      • it is amazing with what little time he has had to throw the ball

  6. Bring back Matt Simms. He was very good at staring down the primary receiver, holding the ball and getting sacked too.
