We’ve heard a lot of talk this year about the astounding number of true freshmen who have been forced to play early and often for Team #118. Another important factor to consider when gauging a team’s youth and experience is the contribution and leadership provided by its senior class. And how many of those players had the benefit of a redshirt year?
Let’s take a look at how many seniors Tennessee has in its two-deep on offense and defense. I think you’ll find it’s a pretty short list.
(I took this depth chart from the official Tennessee release before the Florida game, which I know isn’t always exact. So, if I overlooked anyone, please let me know in the comments below.)
DEFENSE
Jordan Williams (DT) – No redshirt. Jordan had eight starts entering the 2014 season, but those were at defensive end. He added 24 pounds since his junior year and moved inside to a new position at tackle.
A.J. Johnson (LB) – No redshirt. A.J. is the leader of Tennessee’s defense and the Vols’ most experienced player. Johnson has started all but two games since stepping on campus, which gives him 39 career starts to date.
Justin Coleman (DB) – No redshirt. Coleman is the Vols’ second-most experienced defender. He has 30 starts since arriving at Tennessee.
OFFENSE
Marlin Lane (RB) – No redshirt. Despite his time on campus, Lane had a total of six starts coming into the season. (Note: he’s averaging a full two yards per carry less than last year in the same system).
Justin Worley (QB) – No redshirt. Even though he’s the senior leader of this offense, Worley had a total of 10 career starts entering the season. He started three games as a freshman and seven games last year. (Note: Justin Worley’s stats are up this year in nearly every category, despite 17 sacks. Not to mention the number of times he’s been hurried or hit upon release. Also worth noting: Worley is the only senior to start every game on offense this season.)
Jacob Carter (WR) – Jacob is the Vols’ lone senior in the two-deep who redshirted the 2010 season. Carter is listed as a backup receiver currently, but has not started a game in his career and has only 12 catches in his four years on campus. He has appeared in three games this year but has no receptions.

Derek Dooley will go own as the most inept coach in Tennessee’s history.
Thanks Freak. I hope all of Vol Nation reads this. Very sad state of a program, indeed. But, one on the rise!
GO VOLS!
Only others would be Devrin Young and Matt Darr if you consider specialists.
This is when I realized UT’s struggles, the Gap type Offense is difficut for freshman to pick up, you need strength and speed….and grey matter to understand. I don’t know why some offenses want to go to such a complicated scheme, but it is what it is…….and CBJ is the man.
GBO!!
