IRVING, Texas — The National Football Foundation (NFF) announced Wednesday morning that Tennessee redshirt senior tight end Jacob Warren is one of 201 semifinalists for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy, college football’s premier scholar-athlete award.
The Campbell Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership, and the candidates also comprise the pool of nominees for the 2023 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards.
The 201 semifinalists have been nominated by their schools as the best all-around student-athlete on their respective football teams. Each nominee must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The candidates come from all levels of play in the NCAA and the NAIA.
A member of the 2023 NFF Hampshire Honor Society in his sixth season on Rocky Top, Warren holds two degrees from Tennessee. He earned his undergraduate degree in kinesiology in August 2021 before completing his Master of Science degree in agricultural leadership, education and communication in 2023. The Knoxville native has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll a program record five times.
Warren is a member of UT’s football leadership council and has appeared in 45 career games with 24 starts, including all four games this season. The all-around tight end has four catches for 28 yards this fall and pulled in his fifth career touchdown in the season opener against Virginia.
Marked for his efforts in the Knoxville community, Warren serves as UT’s Wuerffel Trophy and AFCA Good Works Team nominee. Warren was instrumental in the planning, promotion and logistics of the Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries (KARM) Coats for the Cold drive this past winter that provided thousands of people in need with cold-weather gear for the upcoming winter. He also has bettered his community through work with the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, the Wesley House Community Center and Love Kitchen, where he organized various types of food, sorted donations and cleaned floors, stairs and seats in their auditorium.
He is also heavily involved with his church, regularly volunteering his time at church events and other activities. Warren volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club through a church program, led Bible studies and engaged with local youth by playing sports and making crafts.
The NFF will announce 12-15 finalists on Oct. 25, and each finalist will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2023 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. One of the finalists will be named the winner of the 34th Campbell Trophy® during the 65th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas on Dec. 5 and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.
