BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Leadership Council will convene for its annual meeting at the SEC offices Friday and Saturday, with junior Jahmai Mashack and redshirt senior Tamari Key representing the Vols and Lady Vols, respectively.
This year marks Key’s fourth in a row as part of the leadership council, while Mashack represents the Vols on the council for a second consecutive year.
The council consists of one male representative and one female representative from each of the SEC’s 14 institutions. The goal of the leadership council is for student-athletes to serve as a conduit of communication from their teams to the conference office on issues related to student-athlete experience, student-athlete wellness, and to provide feedback on proposed rules governing the SEC and NCAA.
Key returns to action after her 2022-23 season ended nine games in due to blood clots discovered in her lungs. Two years ago, Key started 34 contests, averaging career bests in points (10.5), rebounds (8.1) and blocked shots (3.5) per game, rewriting UT records for season (119) and career blocks (295) and becoming the first Lady Vol to produce two career triple-doubles.
Entering his third season with the Vols, Mashack earned a reputation as one of the SEC’s best perimeter defenders a season ago, leading the Vols in steals nine times as a sophomore. He appeared in all 36 games for Tennessee last season, averaging career highs in points (4.7), rebounds (2.4), assists (1.5) and steals (1.4) per game.
The Men’s Basketball Leadership Council and the Women’s Basketball Leadership Council comprise two components of the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council. The third component is the Football Leadership Council, which meets each February.
