Striking Stat: Vols are least-penalized team in the nation

It a game often described as one of inches, penalties can be the difference between winning and losing. It might surprise you to learn that Tennessee, a team playing 22 true freshmen, has the fewest penalty yards per game of any team in the country.

The Vols have committed just nine penalties this season for 64 yards, averaging a nation-leading 21.3 yards per game. They rank third in the nation in average penalties per game (3).

It’s its first road game in Norman, Oklahoma two weeks ago, Tennessee was flagged just once the entire game.

The lack of penalties by this team shows them to be a disciplined, well-prepared group. The fact that they’ve accomplished it with so many young players contributing significant and meaningful minutes is phenomenal. It’s a testament to the coaching staff and evidence of how hard these young men have worked.
