Pearl on PTI

For those of you who missed Coach Pearl on PTI this week, here are his comments regarding the overblown situation that took place during his son’s basketball game at West High School.

“It was a cheap shot but I’ve got to be accountable. There’s no margin for error. I am embarrassed by it because I am a role model. I didn’t do anything. It was an unfortunate situation that got some national attention. Pat Ryan, the former Jets quarterback, was sitting right next to me and he was doing all the yelling. And then after the yelling subsided I said to the official, and he could hear me, you are having a rough time, you have missed three straight, why don’t you just change ends. He looked at me and he put the whistle in his mouth.”

“I have got to be better than that and I am accountable. I tell my players, you’ve got to be accountable. I’m embarrassed by it. I am sorry that you guys have got to talk about it but it happens and I’ve got to move on.”

Coach Pearl also had a funny story to tell this morning on The Doc and Jeff Morning show:

“I had some gentleman just yesterday say Coach, I feel really good about you and really good about the team. I only have three problems with you. I said, what would that be sir? He said: Oklahoma St., Memphis and LSU. I said well, yeah, I suppose you are right sir those would be our three losses.”

Football:

Tennessee has offered a scholarship to WR/DB Tyler Maples from Maryville. Maples runs a sub 4.5 forty and had 23 touchdowns last year. He is the fourth in state player that Tennessee has offered already this year. The others are:

Anthony Anderson, CB/WR, Austin East

Harrison Smith, S/OLB, Catholic

Rae Sykes, DE, Alcoa

Defensive Coordinator John Chavis received a pay raise this week in the amount of $50,000. That brings his total salary to $300,000. Chavis now earns the same as David Cutcliffe, the Vols Offensive Coordinator.

Baseball:

The Diamond Vols open their home season this weekend with a three game series against Eastern Michigan . Luke Hochevar will throw out the first pitch on Friday and Chris Burke will get the honor on Saturday. Tennessee (2-1) is ranked #8 in the latest Baseball America College Top 25 poll.
