Quintin Hancock
Tennessee has some depth at receiver this year. You wouldn’t think it would be likely that a true freshman could get on the field. After all, we have Robert Meachem, Jayson Swain, Brett Smith, Josh Briscoe, Lucas Taylor, Austin Rogers, etc. It would take a lot for a first year player to get the coaches attention.
Here are Coach Fulmer’s comments on Quintin after Saturday’s scrimmage:
“Quintin is one of those guys I think that has pushed himself real real close to helping us. It’s been that way since he came here in the summer. He just keeps getting better. He’s got some understanding yet of splits and reading coverages and some of those things but if the ball is pretty close to him he is going to catch it. He’s got good speed as well. He is one of the freshman, there are about seven of them I think, that will play for us this year. He is one of the ones that could play a significant role for us.”
That’s pretty powerful coming from the head guy. So just who is this Quintin Hancock character? He must have been a five star top 100 wide receiver coming out of high school, right? Surprisingly, he was a three star player rated as the number 54 wide receiver by Rivals. Scout also rated him as three stars but listed him as only the 69th ranked wide receiver.
The numbers don’t lie. In the first scrimmage, Hancock caught everyone’s eye when he pulled down a 50-yard bomb from Bo Hardegree. In last night’s scrimmage he led all receivers with 5 catches for 68 yards. His longest was 36 yards and he grabbed another TD. This time it was a 5-yard catch from Hardegree.
Quintin has not seen any action with the first team and therefore has not gone against the first team defense. However, based on his production and the comments of Coach Fulmer, you should expect to see this kid on Saturdays this fall.
