Phil Fulmer Makes Too Much Money

phil fulmer

According to a Jimmy Hyams, Phillip Fulmer makes too much money and Bruce Pearl doesn’t make enough. That’s right, Jimmy Hyams wrote it and and it surprises me. The numbers don’t surprise me but the fact the fact that Hyams wrote it does.

Ok, he didn’t actually come out and say it exactly that way, but the numbers don’t lie. It’s a pretty bold argument for Hyams, a guy who is never accused of being shocking.

The thing is, it’s really not that shocking when you look at it. I guess I’m just surprised to hear a mainstream guy lay it on the line like that. His argument does makes sense.

He comes up with his fair market values by arguing which other SEC schools would hire each of the coaches at Tennessee. I’ll let you figure out the schools for yourself.

Which SEC schools would hire Pat Summit? All of them.

Which SEC schools would hire Bruce Pearl? All but one or two.

Which SEC schools would hire Phil Fulmer? Five maybe six at most.

If you base each coaches salary on those facts, Pearl is worth about $1.7 million, Fulmer is worth about $1.8 million and Summitt is about right at her current salary of $1.125 million.

That would mean Pearl is underpaid by about $600,000 and Fulmer is overpaid by about $250,000. It is interesting that he has Phil worth more than Bruce, just barely.

Most of us would agree that Pearl needs a raise but with Fulmer getting more than market value, it’s not possible to lower his salary….. is it? I kid.

  1. There’s not a coach in the entire country who’s being paid so much to do so little. Fulmer keeps driving the football program into the ground, yet he’s not being held accountable. The first step in getting the program turned around is to get rid of him, ala Buzz Peterson.

  2. Thanks for the comments Earl.

Fulmer has been here a long time and I want to see him succeed. He will be our coach this season and I will support him. That being said, something has got to change. We have not won a championship or played in a BCS bowl since 1998 and I don’t believe that is acceptable to anyone, including the fans, the AD and the coach himself.

Ideally, I would like to see coach Fulmer get things turned around. He thinks he can. I guess the biggest question is how much time will he be given to do so?

  3. i have said many times that the round hound from k town is the most under achieving coach in america in relation to the talent he has had. he has 2 sec titles in 15 years.he has losing records against SPURRIER,RICHT MEYER,SABAN,TUBERVILLE AND HE ISONE AND ONE AGAINST LES MILES.I will say this to all of you who like to tell me on wlac about fulmers 70% winning percentage. When your facilities ,your tradition ,your resources, and your fan base is better than 90% of the teams you play then 70% just isnt good enough. This program is drowning in a sea of mediocrity. We need a change! NOW.

  4. It’s easy to get on the “Bash Fulmer Bandwagon”, but in most jobs paying what he makes you would be fired immediately for being right, or effective, 70% of the time. Coach Fulmer, or Coach Dudley Dooright, could win 5 or 6 games a year with the talent level at UT. Let’s face it, his 8 and 9 win seasons are not impressive at all. Get over it, longevity means nothing to the fan base, only winning. As I said, if I go to work and have a 70% sucess rate working on patients in surgery, I guarantee you I won’t be around the next season. Why should a multi-million dollar underachieving college football coach?

  5. If Spurrier, Richt, Meyer, Saban, or even Tuberville had been at Tenn 15 years with the talent that has been there over that time, any of them woukld have had five or six national championships. Fulmer has not taken advantage of the talent he’s had. Is he able to?

Ala has had an SEC chapmtionship (1999) since Tenn has. It’s time to find someone who can make the most of the talent that continues to come to Knoxville. I think Fulmer has proved he hasn’t a clue how to do that.

  6. Fulmer is the reason for the lack of enthusiasm and TEAM SPEED at Knoxville. If the VOLS want to compete in the SEC, you’ve got to get some attitude, Nastiness, SPEED, and new, unpredictable plays in your playbook. Phil has none. Time to roll out Phil, Take Chavis, Cut, AND trooper with you, YES Trooper. our WR’s SUCK. These nickle and dime 3 and 5 yard receptions ain’t cutting it. Nip and Tuck that you friggin losers. Love the Vols, Hate the losing.
