On Friday, I heard an interview with Tennessee’s wide receiver coach Latrell Scott who is going through his first spring practice with the Vols since coming over from Richmond with offensive coordinator Dave Clawson. The following is a summary of a few things from the interview that I found interesting.
- When asked which receivers on the team have big play ability to take a short pass and make a big play, Scott named Denarius Moore, Ahmad Paige, and Gerald Jones. He also noted that Quinton Hancock has had one of the best springs of the entire group.
- The strength of the receivers is their depth but they must stay healthy and be able to make big plays.
- Ahmad Paige is coming along. He’s not all the way there yet but has a ton of potential and is gaining confidence.
- Lucas Taylor is the quiet leader of this group. He doesn’t say much but leads by his work ethic. He’s not participating fully in practice, but his absence has allowed the young guys to get more work.
- Scott is very impressed with our secondary and joked that he hopes we won’t face a better group in the SEC this season.
- Lastly, the conversation turned to the Tennessee drill and the competition that sometimes arises between the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, more specifically between John Chavis and the certain offensive coaches. Scott responded, “We told Chief the first day we are not running from him. We love him to death but we’re not running from him.”
