Guitar Shots to the Head: Kiffin Sells

In a slew of recent internet posts, articles and stories on Lane Kiffin fans have had the opportunity to hear every side to every story. We’ve learned:
• “there is no such thing as bad press”
• that Al Davis still hates Lane Kiffin
• that Urban Meyer has no comment
• that UT coaches have a penchant for stripping during recruiting visits,
• that Lane Kiffin only got the job because his father
• that Kiffin’s comments may have been intentional…or not
• that there are UT posters pasted all over University of Florida facilities
• that Lane is either in over his head…or knows exactly what he is doing
• etc….

Lane has been dissected, praised, and bemoaned. Most fans have concentrated their efforts on all of the previously listed items.

What you won’t hear from the media is their side of the story. What is their side? Kiffin sells. Kiffin sells airtime, magazines and newspapers. Somebody sitting in the accounting room of a media department somewhere has noticed it. If you want your product noticed, give Lane Kiffin some airtime. The general public loves to hear Lane Kiffin news. If not, there wouldn’t have been a second or third story.

To further my point, have you ever wondered why you have to hear so much about Barry Bonds or Alex Rodriguez and their steroid use? You would think that by now most would simply assume that every player in major league baseball was taking steroids until they actually prove otherwise.

As much as I hate to mention it, I know that everybody on the Vol Nation has Tebow fatigue. Even when he wasn’t producing Heisman numbers the media could not get enough Tim Tebow. You hear all of these names repetitively for one reason. They sell.

If Lane Kiffin wasn’t selling he would be getting the same treatment that Gene Chizik is receiving at Auburn right now. Ask the average college football fan who Gene Chizik is. For the record I had to Google his name to see if I spelled it right. I really haven’t seen it enough. I guarantee the average football fan knows who Lane Kiffin is.

Up until Monday it has been all fun and games with the media. At times it seemed that they were playing with Kiffin like a kitten plays with a mouse. Something happened on Monday that put the rest of the SEC on real notice. It wasn’t a cheating accusation, or a barb trade with Steve Spurrier. Somewhere along the way, while Kiffin was selling airtime and adds, he also managed to sell his program to the number one recruit in the country.

Don’t act so surprised. He told us that this was going to happen!

  1. all true stories, or facts I should say. Bruce stripping at games is a habit.
