Tuesday Vols' practice notes

After completing the first day of two-a-day practice yesterday, Tennessee was back to a regular practice today. Here a few updates courtesy of SportsTalk. More to come later.

  • The ‘Nu-Gun’ debuted Monday and was in full force again today. Nu’Keese Richardson reportedly took about five to ten snaps at quarterback.
  • The coaches are still moving people around a lot in the defensive backfield. According to Lane Kiffin, Mike Edwards showed up big again and that has allowed Dennis Rogan to get more work at safety. Prentiss Waggner still appears to have the inside track but Janzen Jackson and Darren Myles are also still getting looks. Today, Myles picked off a tipped Nick Stephens‘ pass.
  • Being held out today: Rico McCoy, Brent Vinson, Denarious Moore, Art Evans, Stephaun Raines, LaMarcus Thompson and Herman Lathers. Thompson and Lathers are expected to be back tomorrow.
  • Eric Gordon was pulled off of the practice field this afternoon by the clearinghouse.
  • No word on Marlon Walls, but the fact that he has not been seen at practice isn’t a good sign.
  • Quarterbacks looked ‘ok’ this afternoon. They were under pressure a lot today and as a result there were some overthrows. Jon Crompton appeared to have some ‘pep in his step’ and is playing with a lot of confidence.
  • Left tackle Chris Scott is ‘standing out’ according to Lane Kiffin. Scott is a player that hasn’t really lived up to the hype, but Kiffin believes he may be one of the most improved so far this fall.
  • At the other tackle spot, the battle continues between Jerod Shaw and Aaron Douglas. Shaw continues to be the likely starter but Douglass is making great progress with run blocking. However, he still needs work on his pass blocking.
  • Andre Mathis was injured (extent unknown) and Wes Brown limped off.
  • Marsalis Teague made a great play on a catch down the field.

  1. It’s worth noting that Gerald Williams worked with the first team at defensive end on Monday and Tuesday, ahead of Ben Martin. Kiffin described Williams as “unblockable”.

Also, in addition to the injuries reported, Gerald Jones limped off the practice field but the extent of his injury is unknown. It didn’t sound serious.

Lastly, Anthony Anderson and Marsalous Johnson played corner with the first team defense.
