Jonathan Crompton turned a few heads in the week leading up to the Texas vs. The Nation all-star game and he continued to do so during the contest on Saturday. Crompton, named the starter for The Nation, finished 9-20 for 102 yards with one touchdown pass in a 36-17 loss to Texas.

Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton outperformed inconsistent Tim Hiller (Western Michigan) and Rusty Smith (Florida Atlantic), throwing accurate on short, intermediate and deep passes as he has done all week. The ball doesn’t explode from Crompton’s hand, but it almost always comes out tight. He gives his receiver a chance to run after the catch and has proven he’s the best 2010 draft prospect not scheduled to be at the Combine in February.
Jonathan Crompton in about 4 months went from being a guy we seemed to have a better chance of following Heath Shuler into Congress than to the NFL to the hot QB propect du jour. However he gave back some of the ground he gained in an impressive run of practices.
He throws a very accurate deep ball. Also, very accurate while thowing on the run. He has an NFL frame: just over 6’3″ and a half, 228, he’s been durable. Despite his shaky early season he has developed leadership qualities as his senior season progressed. and is capable of making all the throws required of an NFL quarterback. He can run a bit, but he is far from being a mobile quarterback and he is no real threat to tuck the ball away and take off downfield. Crompton has also greatly improved his accuracy, and especially his decision-making. He does not have a surplus of experience, as this is his first season as a full-time starter; he played in eight games as a junior–starting six–after starting one game in his first two years as a Volunteer. He will be drafted in the middle rounds, especially with this draft year’s QBs.
According to various reports throughout the week, perhaps nobody has helped their draft stock lately more than Crompton, who went 9-for-20 for 102 yards and a 36-yard touchdown as the starter for The Nation. The talent level might not have been as high as at the Senior or Shrine bowls, but at least one scout thought Crompton had the most impressive workouts of any quarterback so far during the exhibition season.
