Wednesday Recruiting Wrap – 1000 mile edition

So, in my last recruiting recap I vowed to try and post these more regularly. How’s that working out you ask? No so good, but I’m back on track today so lets get to it.

Keep in mind this isn’t breaking news, just a recap of some things discussed here this week.

  • The big buzz in the last couple of days has been regarding offensive tackle Trip Thurman. I won’t get into too many details, you can read the thread here if you are looking for some top shelf recruiting banter. Basically, Thurman drove 1000 miles from Delaware to the Orange and White game but the apparently coaches didn’t realize he was here.
  • Cameron Clear is an in state kid that is starting to draw some attention. Chad Simmons called Clear a big, physical kid that passes the eyeball test. He is someone that is starting to turn a few heads. He doesn’t have a Tennessee offer at this point. However, some believe he could receive an offer from the Vols very soon.
  • California running back Brendon Bigelow, who committed to Washington in January, received a Tennessee offer this week. We don’t know a whole lot about this kid but I did see on his ESPN profile($) that he had a knee injury that required surgery. I’m assuming that happened this past season.
  • With Jeff Driskel committing to Florida and Christian LeMay set to announce somewhere other than Tennessee this Friday, the focus seems to be on 6-3, 195 pound signal caller Justin Worley. According to GVX, Tennessee is in his ‘top three or five’. He told Rivals that Tennessee and UNC are a step ahead of the Tide and the Tigers. Worley was recently in Knoxville for the Orange and White Game.
  • According to reports, Tennessee may be the team to beat for California OC Issac Luatua.
  • Kyler Kerbyson has blown up on the recruiting trail. It seems not too long ago that he just had a couple of offers. Now, the 6-5, 290 pound lineman has 16 official offers with recent additions from Alabama, USC, and now FSU($).
  • Juco defensive end Devin Henderson is hearing from Tennessee($). Henderson, who wasn’t a qualifier out of high school, has been working to get his grades in order and now is starting to hear from some big name schools.
  • ESPN published the UA All-American Game roster. There are several players on that squad with at least some Tennessee interest.
  • Mickey Anderews is racking up offers. He won the defensive MVP at the Nike NFTC recently where he said that Tennessee stands out to him along with Alabama, Nebraska, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma State. He plans to visit Tennessee at some point.
  • According to JC Shurburtt, Tennessee offered Pat Martin this week.
  • It would be a tough pull for Tennessee to land ESPNU 150 Watch List prospect Victor Blackwell. By most accounts, he is one of the top receivers in the country. Blackwell mentions Tennessee in this recent ESPN article, but it appears to be a Pac-10 battle for his servcies.
  • Jeff Heuerman was thought to be a strong Tennessee lean at one point, but this week he committed to Ohio State. With one time Vol commit Eric Maclain heading to Clemson, Rory Anderson is likely Tennessee’s top TE target.
  • Kameron Wood said recently that he would like to hear more($) from Tennessee.
  • Ricardo Williams received a Tennessee offer.
  • Brandon Fulse told Justin Hopkins that he may visit Tennessee. “Tennessee I need to learn more about, they have the new coaches there and I’ve been hearing from them. I have some interest in them and may set up a visit.”
  • Defensive end/linebacker Jason Gibson (Gardena, Calif./Serra) measured at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds. Cal has been the leader for some time and there has even been some talk that Gibson could be a silent commit to the Bears, but he denied it saying he’s still looking around. UCLA, Oregon, Florida State, Tennessee and Arizona State have also offered and are on his short list. • Running back Amir Carlisle (Sunnyvale, Calif./The King’s Academy) gave an early commitment to Stanford, but is still hearing from other schools and will take some unofficial visits in the summer. “I’m definitely committed to Stanford but I’m looking at some other schools as well,” Carlisle said. “Cal and ASU have offered me and I’m also hearing from UCLA, Oregon, Alabama, Tennessee, USC, Miami and LSU.
  • Although just a sophomore, defensive back LaDarrell McNeil (Dallas/A. Maceo Smith) is drawing heavy recruiting attention and claims early offers from Tennessee and Oklahoma. McNeil is regarded as one of the top five juniors in the state and said Texas, Oklahoma, Miami, Florida and USC are his current top five.
  • Bradley Slyve is likely headed to LSU, but did say this week that he plans to visit Tennessee and Alabama over the summer.
  • Jay Rome visited Tennessee recently, along with several other SEC schools. While Rome says the Vols are in his top five($), he says he was ‘wowed’ by Georgia, Florida, and Alabama.
  • It looks like Tennessee will get a visit from one of the nation’s top running backs. Mike Bellamy said he plans to check out Knoxville($) sometime before making his decision on signing day.
  • Joel Hale feels like Tennessee could offer soon($).
  • Tennessee recently offered quarterback Nick Marshall, but as a defensive back($). Oddly rumors are that Marshall could be looking to play basketball at Georgia.
  • Tennessee offered Florida cornerback Ahmad Christian.
  • Tennessee also offered Florida running back Andrew Buie.
  • It’s going to be Tennessee or Clemson for Alan Posey. We will find out soon enough. Posey plans to announce his decision on May 4th.
  • Tennessee has offered Todd Barr. He was one of the most impressive participants at the Los Angeles Nike Training Camp at USC on Sunday.
  • Jesse Hayes won’t be making a decision any time soon. He will likely wait until the end of summer before deciding.
  • Corey Marshall is showing Tennessee some love.

If you have anything to add, please do so in the comments. I’m sure I didn’t cover everything.
