Week 1

Through 6 September 2010

Well here we are once again back in the midst of another season of college football.  Along with that comes the return of the SEC Power Poll — a weekly look at the powers that be in the Southeastern Conference.  Bearing that in mind, here’s my ballot for the week, along with a few thoughts.

In all its radiant glory:

Rk. Team Change Comments
1. Alabama Crimson Tide n/a About what I expected, especially the part with the Tide pounding some guy named Jose.
2. Arkansas Razorbacks n/a Fortunately for the Vols, they don’t play the Arkansas Razorbacks this year.  Hopefully Tennessee-Tech is the only team from the Volunteer State that the Hogs man-handle this year.
3. Georgia Bulldogs n/a Hard to know whether the Georgia Bulldogs will keep up their winning ways, but for now, I’m happy with leaving them near the top.
4. Mississippi State Bulldogs n/a The Mississippi State Bulldogs made Memphis look like absolute crap.

Fine by me…

5. Auburn Tigers n/a If I were Auburn, I wouldn’t be as excited about scoring 52 against Arkansas State as I would be concerned about allowing 26.
6. South Carolina Gamecocks n/a So far the Thunderchickens looked pretty good on offense, and … well … pretty good on defense.  Could it be that the Ole Ball Coach has turned the corner in Columbia?
7. Tennessee Volunteers n/a A nice starter game in what could be a terribly difficult season in Knoxville.  At least the first shut-out was a win instead of a loss.  Still, hope springs eternal … or something like that.
8. LSU Tigers n/a Either the North Carolina Tarheels had more fight in them than many believed, or LSU is not a very solid team.  Almost gave the whole thing away near the end.  Fortunately for “the Hat,” they didn’t.
9. Florida Gators n/a I REALLY, REALLY, hope the Gators play like they did against Miami when they come to Knoxville.  That might just make my year.  If they do continue to be so erratic, then it could be a long season in Gainesville.
10. Kentucky Wildcats n/a The era of Joker Phillips begins with a win over Louisville.  I expect to see the Wildcats move up, but they aren’t there yet.
11. Vanderbilt Commodores n/a Considering the Commodores got a new coach just over a month ago, I wouldn’t write this season off … yet.
12. Ole Miss Rebels n/a The Ole Miss Rebels just learned why you should not schedule lower-tier teams unless they are an intra-state school that needs exposure.  They have nothing to lose and everything to gain…

The Rest of the Power Poll
