Super Bowl pick contest and open game thread

Who: Green Bay Packers (13-6) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (14-4)
Where: Dallas Cowboys Stadium — Arlington, TX
Line: Packers by 3
When: Kickoff: 6:29 p.m. EST
TV: FOX

So it’s Super Bowl Sunday and I’m sure a blog post about today’s game is the last thing you expected to see on VolNation this afternoon. But I have good reasons.

First, it’s the Super Bowl and everyone is watching. Granted, some are interested in the game and some are strictly taking in the commercials, but pretty much everyone is tuned in.

Second, this post serves as an announcement that we have officially started our major overhaul of the blog — most of it behind the scenes. This has long been a part of the site that I would love to see flourish. Today, we’ve taken the first step toward that goal by allowing you to post comments via your forum user name. No more messy double log in.

It isn’t perfect, so please let me know if you see any bugs or design flaws (I already see a couple of those). As always, I’m open to any suggestions for improvement.

In order to make it fun, this will be a game comment thread and also a contest. Pick the score of today’s Super Bowl and enter the total yards by both teams as the tiebreaker. I will award the winner a $25 Amazon gift card. Of course, the only eligible entries will be those who post before kickoff.

Go PACK!

  1. First bug with the new comment system. It appears, for some reason, that my avatar is showing for everyone.

  2. I screwed that up. The tiebreaker should be total yards, not total points. Sorry.

  3. Wait, is this total yardage including all yards off kick returns or strictly offensive yards?

    • I posted this last minute and really didn’t think it through. I had just offensive yards in mind. What are your thoughts?

  4. Packers 28 Steelers 24

Total Yards: Packers 383 Steelers 361
    Total combined: 744 yards

    Aaron Rodgers: mvp

  5. I don’t really like the nested comments, so I’ve done away with that. I think I’ll add an option to just “quote” a post like we have on the forums.

I like this quote system much better.

  7. green bay 26 steelers20 green bay total yards350 steelers total yards 335

  8. 14-9 Steelers. 499 yards of total combined yards. Ugly Game I foresee.

  9. Packers draw first blood, 7-0. Have I mentioned that I hate the Steelers?

  10. OWB: Are you claiming to be a Packers fan Freak?

Good point. My wording was a bit strong. The game isn’t boring if you are pulling for the packers.

    Better?

  11. OWB: Well, I’m pulling for the Packers considering the Vols on the team..

You should just give up on the Skins and adopt a new team.

  12. so much for a boring game. The largest halftime def overcome in SB history was 10….could this be a year that this record is broken?

  13. It also seems that the superbowl thread in the NFL forum is getting more traffic

  14. bigdaddy: so much for a boring game. The largest halftime def overcome in SB history was 10….could this be a year that this record is broken?

Might be. The Steelers are looking pretty strong right now with 14 unanswered points. It’s going to be interesting to see what the Packers can do with this possession.

  15. bigdaddy: It also seems that the superbowl thread in the NFL forum is getting more traffic

I know. Creatures of habit. :)I’m still doing some testing on the blog updates, so I’m hanging out in here.

  16. bigdaddy: I have to refresh to see new posts.

You mean when you just load the page, they don’t show? You have to re-load it?

  17. I guess that is normal though. It would be nice if new posts would pop up more like a chat room or something

  18. bigdaddy: I guess that is normal though. It would be nice if new posts would pop up more like a chat room or something

It would be cool if they showed up automatically, but I’m not sure it would matter except for the game threads. We will likely keep those in the forum.

  19. bigdaddy: could be a real shot to the steelers if GB gets a TD here.

Big third down stop. Steelers are going to get it right back.

  20. GAVol: Is this thing on?

The blog is now complete. GA is here. 🙂

Big TD by the Packers. A two score deficit will be difficult for the Steelers to overcome this late.

  21. bigdaddy: funny pepsi commercial

I liked the car commercial where the guy was walking around with a record player (instead of an mp3 player).

  22. bigdaddy: I really hope that Bray can master the back shoulder throw to a wr

That was a nice play… hard to defend.

  23. kind of like the fade pass the CSS beat us to death with at UF in the 90s

  24. The Steelers are going to have a shot to win it. Packers should have put it away right there.

kind of like when coach SS beat us to death with the fade pass at UF in the 90s

  26. ha ha…didnt get my refresh done and got a great double post…..sort of…just wanted to hammer the point home how much I hated that play back in the day

    Point taken. 🙂

  28. pack win…another wild card team won a SB. Got to love having an the wc. I would love to see another team added and extend the playoffs another week. Good for the pack and their fans. Now let’s hope the NFL takes care of binaz and gets the labor agreement made.

Are those the two closest? I haven’t looked at the total yards yet.

Yeah it seems like they are, but I may have missed something.

There were also a couple 31-24 scores on the first page. Luke and Buddr.

  33. Thanks to everyone who participated and please let me know if I overlooked a winning entry.
