As the beginning of the season draws near, preseason watch lists are released for several different college football awards.

Two of those lists were released this morning with three current Vols earning recognition.

Quarterback Tyler Bray (So.) and running back Taruen Poole (Sr.) were two of the 12 SEC players named to the watch list for the 2011 Maxell Award, which recognizes college football’s top player.

After starting the year behind Matt Simms on the depth chart, Bray threw for 1849 yards and 18 touchdowns in just nine games last season as a freshman.

Poole rushed for 1034 yards and scored 11 touchdowns last year, averaging just over five yards per carry.

Cam Newton won the Maxwell Award last season.

Also released today was the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the nation’s best defensive player. Tennessee safety Prentiss Waggner (Jr.) was one of 18 SEC players listed.

Considering his circumstances, it’s understandable that Janzen Jackson didn’t make the list, even though the coaches expect him back. However, Chris Low wrote that he is suprised at the omission of Tennessee defensive lineman Malik Jackson.

I’m a little surprised that Ole Miss defensive end Kentrell Lockett, Tennessee defensive tackle Malik Jackson, Mississippi State defensive tackle Fletcher Cox and Arkansas safety Tramain Thomas weren’t on the list.

Patrick Peterson from LSU won the Bednarik Award in 2010.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

  1. If Prentiss Wagner wins the Bednarik I’ll tattoo his name on my face Mike Tyson style.
