The Marietta, Ga., native is sixth on Tennessee’s all-time scoring list with 2,065 points, a number that would have likely been much higher had the 3-point line been around during Ellis’ tenure with the Vols. (It was adopted nationally in 1986 at the collegiate level.)
Ellis played from 1979-1983 and earned both All-American honors and SEC Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons in ’82 and ’83.
The 6-foot-7 Ellis was drafted ninth overall in the 1983 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks. He averaged more than 15 points per game over his 19-year NBA career and ranks seventh all-time with 1,719 made 3-pointers.
Ellis joins Bernard King, No.53, Ernie Grunfeld, No. 22, and Alan Houston, No. 20, as the only Vol hoopers to have their numbers hang in the rafters at Thompson-Boling Arena.
